Zonealarm - Two thumbs down

September 15th, 2005 Posted in Blog, Rants, Reviews

After getting the popup of a new update available for Zone Alarm (Free) I promptly followed instructions and tried to do it.

I hit clean install and after a moment or two it said that it encountered an error with TrueVector a few times and then said it completed the installation. When I restarted the computer the firewall icon didn’t appear by my system clock so as I was going into the Start Menu my computer reset.

After this I tried to uninstall the firewall but it would not allow me to do so. I then tried to run the update again via the download off of Zonelabs.com but it kept telling me TrueVector caused an error. Obviously something was wrong with the TrueVector software as it wasn’t letting me uninstall it or anything.

The next thing I did was look up the symptoms here as a DLL was broken apparently (ZCOMM.DLL) and read that to fix the installation I’d have to manually uninstall the program. I did so but before I did this I tried to use the Add & Remove Programs tool in the Windows XP Pro control panel and to my surprise, almost all of the programs I’d installed had disappeared from the list. After I manually uninstalled the firewall I reinstalled it and now it works fine but all of my programs have disappeared from the Add & Remove Programs list!

I was quite disappointed as this had never happened with any of the previous updates but also because now most of my software won’t run. I’ll either have to reformat my computer now or re-install everything. That’s 60gb of data.

Can anyone help? I looked in the registry and it looks like it removed all of the uninstall keys but left itself (Zonealarm).
