This might be the best action movie I've ever seen. I can't think of anything with a greater display of cinematography. better than 300

they pulled no punches with the animation. it was ridiculously extensive. unlike most action movies, they went all out with the characters displaying 8 decepticons and 5 autobots. this was refreshing - a change from the normal 1 good guy, 1 bad guy format of all the other live action movies based on series from the 80's (batman, spiderman, etc) This movie makes the spiderman trilogy look like crap.

optimus's voice was done by the same guy who did it in the original cartoon. So the movie had the feel of the original. they added a lot of 80's quirks.

I really liked it, but was the only one of my group of friends who had any problem with it. The Robots needed more character. Even the voices were too messed up, they didn't need to sound like bad computer voices. But as soon as they were fighting in the city, the plot was rushed, and the characters especially the robots, suffered for it. Optimus just came off as some no face robot with a serious martyr complex. But, overall, the movie was awesome. So whatever I guess, the sequel will be better.

I didn't like it very much. It was one of those films in which you can walk out for a quite a while, and come back without it feeling like you've missed anything. Once you get passed the visuals, which weren't really all that mind-blowing anyhow, and you're not left with much of anything.

Argh, just saw it last night(came out a month later in Japan see?), and overall still having mixed feelings about it.

(spoilers ahead, like)

I couldn't quite get the whole thing as to why - if you've just been told that you have the sole lead on the one artifact that could mean complete destruction of your planet at the hands of Megatron - you still had to play the whole hide-and-seek game with, of all people, your parents. I mean, it's supposed to be funny, but that whole bit in the house was just... ridiculous.

Haha, I was also going on last night about how you never felt much of a connection with the other robots. Maybe they over-optimus primed everything. Maybe it's juts me. Real pity that the other robots were never really fleshed out, I'm wondering if I'm the only who couldn't feel much loss when Jazz got ripped in two, nevermind that you never got a clear look at his face throughout the whole movie.

Man, and I was so positive about it.

This movie makes the spiderman trilogy look like crap.

That's not really hard to do. That said, Transformers was largely excellent.

Some things went unexplained, but that was to be expected. And Jazz was dumb. I'm glad that he was torn in half. The final battle sequence of the movie, from a strategic and tactical standpoint, was unmitigated idiocy on the part of the humans and autobots. Lure the enemy into a crowded population centre....good plan. But it was so cool besides that that not even I care that much.

i watched on episode of the old show before going to the movie, as a refresher. it was totally retarded. the one about how the dinobots came to be. holy fuck, the autobots were stupid. they go to a museum and learn all about dinosaurs in this after school special type bit. it is explained that dinosaurs were pea-brained. then they decide "hey! those would be useful!". so they build some. of course, they build them pea-brained and they go on a rampage. idiots.

the hide and seek bit was one of the best scenes of the movie, and one of the best comedy bits I've seen in a movie in a long time. You think it's not serious enough? it's about ALIEN ROBOTS who disguise themselves as cars. The producers did a near perfect job of not being too serious(which would make the movie lame) as well as not being too slapstick.

Half of the movie could have been lame political drama(oval office scenes) or dialogue. The characterization lied in Shia and the humans and that's where it should have been. And was all a good excuse to show off transforming robots, perfect. Trust me, the movie would have been goofy and cartoony if they had any extensive dialogue between the autobots. despite that, they still managed to give character to bumble bee through the radio etc.

Nah, the movie was plenty serious. I`ve always contended that the human element is an essential part of the whole Transformers concept, but just felt that the hide-and-seek bit in the movie didn`t make sense. Not "make sense" as a stereotypic "serious no nonsense" movie should, this is after all, as you pointed out, a movie about alien robots - but given the context of the situation and the scale of it, I thought that scene would fit in better with something like Shortcircuit, or even ET. The consequence of not finding those glasses, at that moment, carried enough weight that trying to hide something from your parents seemed as unlikely as expecting John O'Connor to hide the fact that T-1000 was out to get him.

The bit with Bumblebee talking through radio transmissions was plain awesome, loved that part. As for the rest of the robots, I wasn`t looking so much for more interaction among them, or more political dialogue, but instead, and perhaps I am mistaken to do so, a stronger sense of characterization among the robots that would have gone some way into making you feel the loss of Jazz and such. The radio bits for Bumble for example, that didn`t require a lot of screen time, and it created for a great impression.

Ok FINALLY saw Transformers the other night. It was cool, but also really cheesy with too much cheesy comedy. Actually, the movie was just what i originally feared it was going to be like, ie: too much focus on some dumb human characters in the storyline & not enough robots. When i go watch a Tranformers cartoon, or want to see a Transformers movie, i want fucking robots not 80% of the 1st hour of the flick taken up by some dweeb human kid.

The opening action scene in the desert was very cool. In fact pretty much all the Transformers were awesome. The comedy in the movie was lame. The scene at the kids house was STUPID. And the 1-liners were retarded, ie:

Kid: "Optimus how did u robots learn to speak english?"

Optimus: "THE WORLD-WIDE WEB!!!"

or

Kid: "How did u guys find me?"

Optimus: "EBAY!!!!"

Beyond the dumb comedy, the action scenes were kickass. The movie really picked up towards the end. Having Prime's original voice from the cartoons was sooo cool! Too bad they didn't include Soundwave in the movie, my fav as a kid.

Man if they could have worked in a Soundwave with transforming cassettes and all that would have been awesome(okay, maybe not cassettes, but it would have been great just to see Ravage).

And the moment Prime's voice come on at the beginning of the movie I was just grinning all the way;D

IT'S REALLY HIM!!!

If they'd made the entire thing about talking robots, there would've been no point in spending a bazillion dollars making life-like robots because it would have ended up being a cartooney farce.(like power rangers, or something). In the same manner, if they'd tried making the movie to serious, it would've ended up looking like a parody.

you wanted them to have cheesy one-liners like the cartoon? "your luck as run out, MEgatron!"

Imagine this dialogue in the movie

the robots are just character symbols.

I'm surprised nobody has mentioned the political parallels.

Say what?? The robots ARE the characters. I'm not saying get rid of the humans completely, but i would have cut the human story back a bit. In the movie it seemed like the humans were the focus on-screen for 75% of the time, and the robots 25%. I would change it to robots 70%, humans 30%.

I don't see a problem with making the movie more serious, but have some jokes throughout instead of just campy over-the-top comedy. Spider-Man 1 & 2 (3 kinda sucked) had serious themes in it along with the cool action, but also had some humour & that combo worked perfectly.

I will say though, that at least the flick was way better than "Doom". That movie SUCKED!!!
