Rico?

Recommended Posts

So maybe im a little late for this one but I was just on the nearfantastica.com homepage and i saw a shirt for sale with the word rico with a cross over it. Does nobody like this song? Whats the deal? I have been a huge fan for many years and i couldnt understand why people dont like that song. Maybe its alluding to something else, i dunno. Anyway I would love to know what everyone thinks

I'll field this.

It's a reference to a couple of things, but mainly it's a dig at all of the people who go to Matt's acoustic concerts and yell "rico".

And there's also the fact that Matt has said on numerous occasions that he wishes he had never written the song.

And I've heard "Rico" yelled out at every show since he stopped playing the song, acoustic or full band ;)

it's an alright pop song, but its not a great representation of the direction he went.

come on, like everyone here doesn't like the "if your friends don't like it you can tell them from me, FUCK OFF, FUCK OFF, FUCK OFF, FUCK OFF" line ;)

Matt played Rico at a Canada Day show here at the Forks (a big outdoor park where Winnipeg celebrates Canada Day) but since it was a family event, when they got to the fuck off part he just held the mic out to the audience... I was the only one in the area I was standing who knew the words so I sang them. I got A LOT of dirty looks and I looked at people glaring at me and I said "What?! Those are the words... Oh fuck off" and went back to having a blast

From what I remember, I think every MGB show I saw where they played "Rico" he got the crowd to sing the "fuck off" part.

Does he actually listen to his own records and think something like:

"Yeah man, I love that fuckin' song!!...

...I love THIS part...

and what a great solo!..." ?? ;)

I remember reading a very early blog that said he at least tried not to play his music in his house (when he was still married; dunno about now). I'm sure he's proud of certain parts of the songs, though. This was also one of those posts where he was like, "I never get to listen to any music by other artists!" and was considering not making music for a while so that he could become more of a music appreciator.

yeah Middle Class Gangsters and Rico are equal in my books.

Matt played Rico in Calgary on his last full band tour. ..it was pretty surprising

During the In A Coma tour? He sure did not:

The Rat Who Would Be King

Avalanche

Load Me Up

Oh Be Joyful

Suburbia

Empty Road

21st Century Living

Hello Time Bomb

Everything Is Automatic

Blue Skies Over Bad Lands

Weapon

Advertising On Police Cars

Encore

Giant

Alert Status Red

Prime Time Deliverance (Acoustic)

Apparitions (Acoustic)

I have to say it: I like Rico. It's not the absolute best, but it's catchy and Matt looks like Mick Jagger in the video.

I'd be awesome to hear it live for shits and giggles, but I really don't care what he plays, just as long as I see him live. (He could play Yankee-fucking-doodle-dandy for five hours straight and I'd sit through the entire thing. ;) )
