I have to agree. I like the song. It reminds me of the simpler days when he wrote rock songs. I enjoyed the video too.

I haven't seen the video, but he still writes rock songs. Just because they're a bit deeper doesn't mean that they are not rock, and he wrote some deep material all the way back to when he was a "folk singer." I think the difference you're really referring to is the harder sound, because only a few of his songs are openly jokes/pretty meaningless. That said, Rico does make me laugh, as does Middle Class Gangsters and The Workers Sing a Song of Mass Production, but I wouldn't be begging for them to be played at shows.

It's about him being a doll and having a tag on his back. I know there are deeper connotations with these things, like that he's been made/being used, the Taiwanese don't have time to laugh because they're always working, etc. but I still think it's pretty funny if you don't think about the implications. Imagine Matt ripping a tag off of his back and being like "Oh, I was made in Taiwan" or something.

 

I think it's one of the best too, as far as listen-ability goes. It's very fun to listen to. But to me it's sort of from a bygone era where he was.. well, very youthful. That's why I said I wouldn't particularly request it at a recent show if that's what irked ya.

Musically the bridge is Rico is actually really strong. And as a whole for a "pop song" it isn't that bad.
