What are people's thoughts of this tune? Do we know what Matt thinks of it?

Personally, it's only an okay song, and I think we all know how Matt feels about most of AoB.

I think the song is pretty good, but yeah, given the time period and everything that was going on... I can understand why he wouldn't want to play it.

I like the song a lot actually. But he probably doesn't play it because of how forced AoB was. It's probably not as personal as other songs are to him.

He should give up his perception of the AOB songs and start playing them fully, this would be great to hear for once, along with some others from this era of course.

I, The Throw Away is right now my favorite Matt song, I just like the feel of the lyrics, and the softness of the music.

i'm kinda surprised that anyone would say it's an okay song among mg's tracks. It'd definitely up there. it's not on the all time top 15 but it would make the slow top 15.

I don't know anything about guitar, really, but I think I remember Matt saying something about the tuning this song (and many others from the Audio of Being era) were written in and that it he didn't want to deal with always having to retune his guitar or using specific capos, etc.

 

I'm sure it's in the archive somewhere.

Quite a few songs on AoB (Carmelina, Truffle Pigs, The Fall of Man, Under the Influence [well, the bass at least]) are tuned down to Drop-D, minus a half step. If you don't have your guitars set up for that tuning, the low E, which is tuned down to Db, can become very loose and lose the tuning quite easily if you're keeping the guitar in that tuning for an extended period of time.

 

As far as I know though, Throw Away is just in Eb tuning, like most songs from Beautiful Midnight on.

And I just thought of this at work- if you're going to be using a drop-Db tuning like that, you'll have to put heavier gauge strings on to keep up the tension so it doesn't naturally go out of tune, in addition to setting up the guitar for that tuning.

Someone yelled it out at the second date in Winnipeg in 2006 on the acoustic tour. He started to play it, got through most of the intro and started the verse but than quit citing it was in the half song column. And it is in standard tuning half a step down.

Actually the reason why we don't get this song is the same as why Matt doesn't do most songs, he doesn't want to.

He knows how to play Fearless. When I play I cover Fearless all the time, but the song really loses its brightness without the piano.
