Do You Want/think Matt Should Start Up Mgb Again?

Recommended Posts

Sorry if this thread has been done before.. and I'm pretty sure it has been.

Now i'm not saying get back together the old group because that would never happen but do you think he should start a new band under the same name? different name?

This thread is not a dig at his solo work just to be clear.

yep, this thread has been done a couple dozen times by now ;)

what's the point of him performing under "matthew good band" when he plays exactly the same material as he does solo?

he did write most, if not all, the material with the exception of some instrumental bits by the ex-members so it's not really like anything has changed.

That's true..

Good is also (i'm saying this half joking) well...getting old.. I mean he will be 37 this month this is kind of funny but do you think he could still pull off the rocker thing? I mean have you watched the Music Video for Hello Time Bomb lately? It's kind of weird seeing him Rock out like that now.

I just hope he tours with a band more often now(and play some older stuff!) this is the first in three years or so right?

Also I dunno....having that one extra word makes it sound better..>_>

I don't find it weird...he's 37 not 60... lol ;)

No one finds if weird to see Bono rock out or write songs like Vertigo and he's 48!

He's not necessarily lacking any rockstar dynamics on this tour either.

i don't think he should call himself MGB anymore, that was a collection of four guys, even if he did write most of the material. i don't think he would do that/want to do that (clearly). He should continue playing more with a full band and he seems to love this new line-up lately, seems to be very fresh.

I'd always call MGB "Matt Good" so I don't think it really matters.

yeah. i've tagged all my MGB songs on my computer as simply "matthew good."

as matt's written before, he's perfectly happy being solo. if he doesn't like something, he has the power to change it and doesn't have to worry about dealing with three other heads to butt with first. i think how he recruited this new band is a bit weird, but i have yet to see them live, so i can't really say as to whether or not it really works. the avalanche and WLRRR era band was great though. they were more or less "recruited" by him as well, and i got the impression that they worked really well together. live, at least.

it'd be fun to see him collaborate with other people in the future though. whether it's a full time band or just a one-off side project.

Matt's the brains behind everything I love about his music. I don't care what he calls himself or his band, I'm still gonna listen to him, buy everything he puts out, and go to his shows.

I do love the band he's playing with now though. The new guitarist has really improved the live shows. I miss Patt though, he put on a great show as a drummer too. I don't ever remember him singing back-up though like the new guy does. I also deffinatly love him having a pianist on stage.

I think the new drummer really got Pat's drumming well. None of these musician make me miss any of the other guys. Not to say that the older members of the touring band were not good, but this new installement is awesome, all of them!

The only thing I found funny is the return of the Load Me Up riff that Matt said he hated before and Christian played differently. My theory on that is that, given that Matt doesn't write music, they probably learned all the songs by ear with the records.

I don't know who's idea it was to bring in the slide for Apparitions and Blue Skies Over Badlands but God they sound awesome!

I agree with that 100%!

In addition to the newer beginning of Load me up, I really missed the way Hello time bomb was done in previous concerts when it was slowed down at the end. I really like that version better.

Yes, now I haven't seen or heard the new live band but I have been thinking the White Light/Avalanche band is the way I think I'd like Matt to go with. I think they were the tightest of his solo career and it just seemed like they worked really well together. I wouldn't mind a return of Christian Thor Valdson, he seems solid.

I think it would be pointless for him to start another "Matthew Good Band", the only thing that would change is him having full-time band members. I don't think he wants to be attached to a group of guys, he probably wants to do his own thing. I think he also enjoys the freedom to go off and do the acoustic shows.

When he made that post on his blog the other day about drugs, he mentioned that in 2005 members of the band/crew had been doing drugs behind his back. Maybe that could be why he is not with that band anymore?

does lenny kravitz perform under "the lenny kravitz band"? no.

why? because he is solely responsible for the creation of his music... he just needs help performing it live. same with matt. from a financial standpoint, it's much cheaper to just hire a band only when you need them.

And really, how many of us, at this point, give a shit WHO plays the music with Matt? As much as I enjoyed Rich, Pat and Christian, and in the past, Dave and Ian, I'm at that point where as long as I can hear the music, I don't care who the backing players are.

It really wouldn't mater to me if he reformed MGB. The first CD of his I bought was Audio of Being, and Avalanche was the album that sold me for life, so most of my education about his music came as he was embarking on his solo career. Even now, I still much prefer his solo work and I just can't picture Dave's guitar playing doing it any justice. (I'm not a fan of his guitar work. It's very one dimensional and Matt's new stuff is everything but.)

exactly. matt wrote the music and the words, so as long as the players have some kind of talent and musicality who gives a fuck who puts the shit into the amp. it would be different if the new guys were contributing to the progress of the 'band' (kinda like the ryan dahle matt good experiment) but they aren't.

Nobody has complemented and collaborated with Matt as perfectly as Genn did. Matt didn't "write everything", just the vast majority of it.

Sadly, the only way they'll get back together is if Matt and Genn both hit their heads and suffer amnesia.

absolutely, dave's choice of guitar parts and keyboard parts really added a lot. post audio of being guitar parts, aside form some stuff on avalanche, has all been pretty traditional pop-rock stuff. that said the new stuff has had some great stuff as far as instrumentation goes, but there is less stuff that makes you go "what the hell was that noise?" (granted, hospital music has a lot of tape loops, and avalanche had lots of reverb/delay)

but i'm not matt good, and at the end of the day, if he wants to do all the work himself and hire people for the live shows, it's his place to do so.

Gag me or lock this thread. It's unbelievable how irrelevant this topic is here.

If you'd like, I could start a thread entitled "The world: Is it really flat?"
