Man Of Action

Recommended Posts

I've never really got into Man of Action that much, Audio of Being is probably my least favourite MGB/MG album as well. I think Truffle Pigs and The Rat Who Would Be King are excellent tracks, but other than that I don't think it is even comparable to Beautiful Midnight or Underdogs. I would have to say Fall of Man is probably the only Matt Good song I don't like at all. Also, the singles on the album, Carmelina and Anti-Pop, really felt like they were just on there for singles. But I know the album and Man of Action are both big fan favourites, just for me personally not so much.

Has Matt ever played Man of Action in concert? I also really wish I could see it (and all of Audio of Being, for that matter) live. My favorite parts are the intro and from around 4:45 until the end--specifically where Matt sings the second "if this is us in control of ourselves" before it launches into the guitar outro ... such an explosive moment!

AoB is probably one of my top three album favourites. However I do agree anti-pop seems thrown in there, and rat who would be king is a great track. I enjoy Fall of Man simply because its one of the heavier songs. It applies to the stressful time the whole band was going through.

taro_twist: The only songs from AOB that were played live are Carmelina, Advertising on Police Cars, The Fall of Man, Under The Influence, The Rat Who Would Be King, I believe The Workers Sing a Song of Mass Production and more recently, Sort of a Protest Song. I say 'only' as in not other were played and not in a 'he should've played more' way. It is 7 songs out of 12 lol.

Say what you will about the album in itself, but Man of Action is an explosive opener. To me, it's like the dark twisted older brother of Giant.

A little chill goes down my spine whenever I hear that hum and the beep 'You are now listening to the Audio of Being'

Good stuff.

Tripoli is my favourite song off AoB. They played that one live too, in 2005 I think. Unless I'm on crack, which is definitely possible.

No, He definitely has played Tripoli Live, I remember him seeing it acoustic on the "In a Coma" Tour. He has played quite a few of them live, but they are always quite diferent from the originals. I remember seeing Rat who would be king live during "white light rock and roll revue" tour, and it was great.... but there was definitely something missing (the crazy beeping as the song climaxing for one), and carmelina acoustic during his acoustic tour, along with SOAPS. Personally my fav MG(B) album.

Man of Action, Carmelina and Tripoli are an amazing One-Two-Three Music Punch. It's like getting aural. Audio of Being is my favourite Matthew Good Band album as I do list the solo efforts separate from the band in my head. Not saying that any of it's bad (except for Ghetto, that album is for sure The Phantom Menace of the MGB albums) just saying that they are akin to being two different chapters.

Like, I don't say that the Asteroid Chase is my favourite Star Wars moment, I say that it's my favourite Empire Strikes Back moment, because Star Wars: A New Hope and Empire are two different movies.

Two Star Wars references in one post, Nerd Points +1.

I actually really like Ghetto Astronauts, I would actually rather listen to it than AOB most of the time. I think though that it isn't fair to compare LOTGA to the other three MGB albums. I think Matt was still developing as a song writer and musician when they did LOTGA, and that is quite evident. I still think it was an excellent album, especially considering it was their first major album and how young Matt was at the time. I think because of those factors it isn't fair to compare LOTGA to the other three MGB albums, similar to how it is hard to compare the MGB albums to the solo albums.

I think that Alabama Motel Room is comparable to Everything is Automatic, and Symbolistic White Walls is still one of my favourite MGB songs. I think She's Got a New Disguise, Fearless and Haven't Slept in Years are also amazing songs. Sure there are song weaker tracks like Radio Bomb but again I think considering that it is a first album it was very good.

I agree with Curtster, you can't compare the two albums. Matt's music matures with every album he does. I'm not the biggest fan of LOTGA but you have to give it the credit it deserves.

As for AOB, it is an amazing album from start to finish. Man of Action blows you away and SOAPS calms you down with that beautiful ending. Matt has that ability to be diverse with his style of songs in each of his albums.

Fall of Man kicks ass btw
