Bad Pennies!

Recommended Posts

This is a great song. I understand Matt said it was a throwaway... often times the best songs are ones that aren't labored over. I'd implore him to do whatever he needs to to make himself happy with it, cause of all of the songs, aside from The Boy Who Could Explode, it's easily the most accessible.

Favorites of the demos? Vancouver National Anthem, Silent Army In The Trees (electric), Boy Who Could Explode, Bad Pennies and Portrait Of Artist In Jungle.

Damnit I thought this was going to be about Bad Pennies being finished and ready for me to listen to even though that will never happen ever. Sigh.

I think that makes it finished and therefore ready to listen.

There are parts of the lyrics I like, but the on the whole it's pretty meh.

I dont understand. Matt Good puts crap like Pledge of Allegiance and Song for a Girl on a CD, but wont put Bad Pennies - which is better than those two songs by the way -- on a CD? Makes no sense.

Well uh. When you make a CD and have a contract with a major label, you can go put whatever songs you want on it lol.

Actually, major labels will often voice complaint with tracklistings or song selections. Well, for the big players anyway. EDIT-- didn't the record label make Matt go back and record some more 'single' worthy material for WLRRR?

I do find Matt seems to make an effort to avoid the more accessible of his songs... I don't know why. My complaint about Vancouver, or what I know from putting the demos together in an album format, is that it sounds slightly monotonous right now. Bad Pennies would really break it up IMO. Look at Elliott Smith, he often contrasted dark/serious themes with poppy music. I sometimes worry that Matt associates hooks with less important/serious music.. although Boy Who Could Explode is quite catchy, and that's seemingly on the record.

I disagree. Pledge is one of my favourite songs, and I thought it suited Avalanche excellently as the album opener. I can still remember the first time I heard it, the album's anticipation was killing me and I was just floored by PoA for some reason.

And then on the Avalanche tour he completely nailed it with the alternate vocals "be your disappointment baby", "done letting you down".

I don't like the acoustic one as much because I find that version boring. The chord progression stays the same, where in the album version, the chorus is different and leaves the arrangement with more of a climax, I find.

Just me, though.

And I`ve never heard Bad Pennies. It makes me sad.

Strange I had this conversation yesterday!

Pledge of Allegiance is a great song, but the synth version on the album with the beat he gave it is quite boring.

During the Avalanche tour, the piano version was absolutely awesome. The acoustic version is pretty good too.

Champions of Nothing was the first real killer album opening since Man of Action. Put Out Your Lights gave the tone for WLRRR but was just a song on the record.

PoA is fine on the cd but definitely gets skipped. LOVED it on the tour though...

if anyone has a good bootleg of it they should post it up! I can't seem to find it on my pc.

Hit me up if you want it, I have a good bootleg version from Vancouver on the Avalanche tour.
