I heard about this late last night and I'm not ashamed to say I'm pretty heartbroken about it.

Vanity Project proved to me that Steven Page, while a talented songwriter and singer, doesn't have the same impact, without the rest of the band to compliment him.

And at the same time, I don't think BNL will be the same without Ed and Steve's iconic vocal harmonies. In fact, I would even go as far to say that BNL's voice is 60% Steve's voice.

I dunno. When stuff like this always happens, "it won't be the same" is a common comment. But I'm inclined to agree.

I love Ed, and I love his song writing too, but Steve has always had a very witty, sugar-coated darkness to his lyrics. They're surprising, beautiful and honest. I worry BNL will lose a lot of what made their lyrical content so engaging.

*sigh* I'm feelin' pretty heavy hearted about this decision. But if it truly was a mutual decision (as their website says), then I suppose I should wish them all the best.

I just really wished I had gone on Ships & Dip this year now ;)

Which is the same fate of what happened to Great Big Sea...

I'm not quite sure what you're referring to here? Alan Doyle and Sean McCann (The "Ed & Steve" of GBS) are still currently part of GBS. Are you referring to Darrell Power? While he is a much-missed part of GBS, and had a pretty distinct voice and great talent with many instruments, he wasn't as integral a part of the band as Alan or Sean. I personally didn't notice a *too much* difference, having gone to concerts before and after Power left.

Going back to BNL, I've reached the almost angry/bitter phase of my "mourning". I would like to wish Steve the best, but at the same time, I wonder if all the mess he's been getting into lately, had anything to do with his departure? I just don't think he's strong enough an artist to be on his own. If he's going to pursue theatrical possibilities, then cool, he's always had that kind of "broadway" voice...but I just don't know if he can cut it solo. He's no Matt Good :/

BNL has always enjoyed a consistent fan base, and while not always "visible" on the charts, have always enjoyed modest success. And they're a humble band, they don't tend to ask for more than what's necessary. They're very grateful for their fanbase. In terms of charts, I don't think they'll see too much of a difference in that aspect. In fact, the last few singles, I believe, have been very "Ed-centric".

I was deeply disheartened by this news. I really like BNL, and while they put a positive spin on it, Steven's unfortunate incidents have done some serious harm to the band's rep...I really hoped they'd overcome this, I have to wonder how much of that was part of the decision.

That being said...I agree with the sentiment that they are a damned good fit together, and this will effect the band's chemistry and output tremendously. I also can't see Page, standing well on his own...so if anything I would think this is going to be a temporary situation...and they will reunite in the near future.

omg haha I have never seen that. Ed did voice acting for Red Vs. Blue, that just reminded me. As Capt. Butch or something! Red vs. Blue was such gold.

A fun bit of trivia, but for their "Everything to Everyone" tour, Rooster Teeth made special R vs. B videos, that they played during the concerts. They were really funny.

Not to rag on Steve, but he was always the angsty one. Ed was the one with the sense of humour haha

anyways, steven page has left the band. they're going to continue without him and are headed into the studio.

Been a huge BNL fan ever since BOAPS. The only songs on the last three albums that have been any good were the ones written by Steve, yet the Vanity Project sucked. I'll be looking out for his solo work still. This news is devastating as a fan, but inevitable.

I just recently got back into them and found some songs I never listened to before.. it's been years since I last listened to BNL and I loved them back in the day.

I think it's time for a change for them... I mean the last album was good, but Steve seems to be phasing out anyways and I think they'll manage. As for the Matthew Good solo comment, I don't think Matt Good was all that good solo until maybe Hospital Music and even then I think he still has some work to do. So I guess my point is cut Steve some slack he'll do some work find his own way and he might release an amazing solo album at some point, but I don't expect it on the first or even second try.

I didn't mind the album. It is a little more serious at times than other releases they've had. I would highly recommend it over Steven Page's solo album of covers called "A Singer Must Die." I think the one thing about the BNL album that threw me off, was the other guys in the band getting vocal time. I'm used to hearing mainly Ed and Steve, and it was weird to hear Kevin singing.

I recommend it, but I liked the single.

The album definitely grows on you. I had to give it a few listens before I started getting into it. It's definitely a lot more serious.

This album actually got me to accept Kevin as a vocalist. "Hidden Sun" was never my favourite before, and I thought Kevin was a weak singer. I LOVE that Jim is getting songs now, because I've always been a fan of The Brothers Creeggan.

I want to pick up "A Singer Must Die", I didn't know it was out! ;)

I went to the UBC AMS Block Party (formerly the Arts County Fair), since BNL were headlining and had it not been for the completely retarded drunken losers making my life a living hell for an hour and a half, I gotta say, Ed really picked up the lead vocal role really well. He sings Old Apartment like a pro, and What A Good Boy was surprisingly good. And nothing beats seeing/hearing Ed beatbox live <3
