Just wondering what you guys think of the new cd, with William DuVall as the lead singer. He's not Layne but does a good job I think. At times I find he does sound like him, but I understand he needs to do his own thing as well. Overall I'm really liking this album. If you're an AIC fan what do you think ?

the vocals are pretty heavy on the jerry (just the way i like 'em) so i don't think it's really accurate to call william the new 'lead' singer. i think it's a pretty solid album, but i'm a total jc fangirl whore so i'm biased. everything that man touches turns to fucking awesome, if you ask me.

as usual, sdt is talking out his ass. it sounds nothing like anything alice in chains has ever done - least of all layne-heavy 'old' alice in chains. if all you know is their singles, you are not equipped to judge and should instead stick to trying to make a love connection with the unwilling ladies of fargo or wherever the fuck you live. what it DOES sound like is solo jerry cantrell with a smattering of comes with the fall - in other words, it sounds exactly like what it IS.

layne's gone. he's not coming back. this is what is left. enjoy it or don't, but stop your tit-sucking about the lack of layne. i'd much rather hear these guys continue to put out sweet jams that are gonna carry on a legacy and blow everything else on the radio out of the water than mope because layne's not around.

bishop - where'd you see them? i'm seeing them next month.

Saw them in NJ when they were on tour with Velvet Revolver. I kinda wished they'd played longer. I was impressed, I thought he handled the job well. I'm an AIC fan from day one, and I was skeptical, but he was good. I think it'll leave you feeling pretty damned awesome.

And Sodamnedneedstodigdeeper, you really have to go beyond the singles, to appreciate them as a band. Yes the singles rock, but there is some pretty fucking amazing shit sandwiched around them. I have a pretty big library of their stuff, the stuff that didn't make it on the albums is pretty fucking far out.

i saw them twice in '06 with duvall - and i saw jerry twice on the degradation trip tour waaaay back in '02. comes with the fall opened and william was playing with jerry even back then, so i guess i'm just used to the idea of those two working as a team. you just have to stop thinking about alice in chains as layne staley and listen to this stuff for what it is. i can't see anyone that is a fan of jerry cantrell - and if you're a fan of aic, you're a fan of jc - being disappointed by this.

i don't know what stuff you have that wasn't released, bishop. it's pretty well known in the aic communities that there's actually NOT a lot of unreleased stuff. they were never a band to go out and record tons of shit that wasn't gonna be put on the record.

I'm jealous, Mrs. Jesus, those shows must have been awesome. I'd seen AIC a four times, I wish I'd had more opportunities.

I agree with your opinion. It requires a an open mind to be appreciated. I was definitely drawn in by the combination when I saw them. It was a different feel, but it wasn't contrived, it was more like what you described. Definitely an experienced and well matched pairing. I think Duvall is an amazingly talented vocalist and he and Jerry complimented each other well onstage.

I was referring to the demos and assorted awesomeness that was in the box set, that most non-fans never heard. Some of it is really quite insightful. I personally like the rawness of the Bleed The Freak demo.

this will be my 4th time. the first time i saw them i was 16, it was lollapalooza, and i was frying balls on acid. i don't remember shit, but since layne was still alive i like to brag about it anyway. i don't remember where you live, but i think it's somewhere up north - and they just toured up there. why didn't you try to catch a show??? tsk tsk.

ha. i don't like the old music bank demos. i don't like my alice in chains sounding like an 80s hairband, and i fucking love some 80s cheese. i can't explain it.

this past august i went to the layne staley tribute in seattle. the tribute itself was boring as shit - but it was still a really fucking cool feeling to be in a club full of people that were there solely because they wanted to remember him. i'm aiming to go back in a couple of years... hopefully by then they will have decided to stop having shitty bands play and utilize all the GOOD musicians that have heaps of respect for layne.

First off Gomo...I'll forgive the Matchbox 20..but ewww just the same.

I saw them open up for VH and at Lollapalooza the first time. They fucking killed, and other than several beers both shows, I was fairly straight. Totally worth it. I totally broke up the band I was in at the time, because I wanted to play more stuff like that, and not the lame ass hair wannabe shit we were writing. I no longer live in Maine, I now reside in Sunny SoCal and spend my days in the sun. I'm headed to VA in two weeks to see Silversun Pickups and Stone Temple Pilots.

I like some of them, I really like the Facelift demos though, they have a raw garage feel to them. There's a club in Maine that does battle of the tributes, they did Alice In Chains vs Pearl Jam in June, and I played bass on a few songs with each band. Jenny, the lead guitarist from the band I'd been working with, can mimic Jerry, and several other amazing guitarists. She's a huge AIC fan, and probably would have loved that, and though she probably would have been sickened by bad covers. She often said that she might consider going straight for JC.

Sniffle, she just moved to San Francisco, so it was good that I left maine when I did.

Damn that must have been cool just for the sense of community.

so you finally made it to compton? god, i'm funny. seriously. it ain't even right.

yeah - the tribute was pretty cool. being in seattle was cool enough on its own, but i got to meet a lot of my aic internet nerd friends and remember layne with people that get it like i do, so it was a good experience. A++ would go again!

Actually I did laugh at that. Sorry to disappoint you Mrs. Jesus, I'm in San Diego. I did visit Compton once, about 10 years ago though. Just to see what it was like. Needless to say, it was a cursory glance, and I got the fuck out of there quick.

It sounds like a great time, and a rewarding one.

I've driven through compton when I was like 14. Pretty scary being the only white dudes there in a ford mustang. My dad was on business in an area around there? He says he's in the door hardware business. But really, it's a front for his porn site ops.
