Great Whales Of The Sea: What Do The Lyrics/song Mean?

Recommended Posts

Gonna try this out with a few songs on Vancouver and see if there's much response. If there is then i'll make threads for the rest of the songs on "Vancouver".

So what do you think this song is about?

Personally i have no fucking idea. Something about whales. Are there any whales off the coast of Vancouver or something?

if you listen to the 90's at noon interview clips on cfox, matt explained off air that it was a metaphor for the end of live acts in vancouver in a similar way to extinction with whales. vancouver has many marine mammals but is most known for the orca (killer whale), which is actually a member of the dolphin family. thanks to pollution, the pods that live off the pacific coast are dieing off and experiencing high infant mortality rates.

I thought that it was an analogy similar to us being small in comparison to the rest of the universe. We're small in comparison to whales and our problems are smaller than the bigger things going on around us. "you disappear me"

I'm not explaining it well but I'm slightly drunk. something like that.

Matt has said in interviews (I think on Muchwest) is that he likes to lay his songs out there, and the listeners decide what they are about.

which i think is great, having an artist explain their work can leave you with a sense of disappointment after you've found your own interpretation of their work.

I thought the abuse of the whales was a prelude to our own self destruction. At the rate we are going, we will eventually consume all natural resources and bring about our own end.

The song's about how two humpback whales must be taken forward in time to the 23rd century, in order to speak to a probe from the far reaches of space and stop it from destroying the Earth.

Seriously. It's about Star Trek IV.
