Matt Good On The Hour

Recommended Posts

I liked the interview, though Matt seemed a little tired and understandably so with the tour having gone on for a month and a half. I kind of groaned at the "parasitic" statement about humans. Yes, I get it, we have the ability to destroy human lives or creations or land or whatever else, but I don't believe that we are inherently parasitic. Misanthropy is boring. I would expect such a quote from a teenager.

But its pretty much true, at least since the Industrial Revolution.

I like how Agent Smith in The Matrix puts it:

"I'd like to share a revelation I've had during my time here. It came to me when I tried to classify your species. I realized that you're not actually mammals. Every mammal on this planet instinctively develops a natural equilibrium with their surrounding environment, but you humans do not. You move to an area, and you multiply, and you multiply, until every natural resource is consumed. The only way you can survive is to spread to another area. There is another organism on this planet that follows the same pattern. Do you know what it is? A virus. Human beings are a disease, a cancer of this planet."

Lol, thought of the exact same quote when I heard him say that. And I agree too- it's not about whether human beings are inherently parasitic, it's about what our overall net effect on the world is today as a result of the type of society we promote. Hence, we are, right now, parasitic. Then again I suppose that depends on who we're actually talking about and what part of the world we're focusing on....

As far as the overall interview went I quite liked it. George always has been a great interviewer and gave Matt a chance to touch on some interesting subjects. Didn't agree with him completely about the political leaders and hot dog stands comment but whatever, just my opinion.

Interview is here for anyone that missed it:

I was thinking the exact same thing

maybe Matt was making him uncomfortable...

Interesting that Matt didn't even hesitate for a second when he said "Avalanche" was his favourite song (he's written) of the decade. The way he said it was almost like "no contest".

all artists have their hands down favourites!! The piece you're most proud of!!

It's because guess what, Matt is very well-versed politically and George just knows headlines. See the first Hour interview from 2007 for more of George's non-responses to in-depth political banter.

Also I feel Matt needs to lay off the "I took 45 Ativan and survived" crutch. Lorazepam isn't the most powerful drug in the world, and I feel Matt uses a lot of these 'scary factoids' coupled with a disgusting smugness he assumed post-MGB. He wasn't always like this. Or maybe he was, but there was always a shroud of mystery that made him more cooler during his tenure with the MGB.

a near death experience is usually a pivotal moment in one's life, and given matt good's status as a canadian celeb, i find it quite admirable that he openly discusses how mental illness has effected his life, including overdosing on ativan. you may think it less cool that a celebrity uses their status to bring social topics to the general public, personally i prefer it.
