A Thought About Tripoli And Being A Has-Been.

Recommended Posts

I was singing Tripoli the other day and when I sung the "I will awake to be a has-been" I realized something about the meaning of this phrase.

When the song came out in 2001, I saw being a has-been as a bad thing, as if Matt was actually afraid of being a has-been. But now, knowing how Matt is with fame and the lyrics surrounding that phrase, I think it's actually the opposite.

We all know Matt's never been too comfortable with being famous. So when he says "Best to smile, best to squeel for daddy" he's actually saying he's just playing the game, being obedient. "Best to defile, best to stay sleeping, in a while, I will awake to be a has-been", my understanding is that he wants to go to sleep until his popularity phases out. Just like when someone complains about winter for example and would prefer just sleeping until spring comes again.

Was this obvious to everyone and I'm just slow? :P
