Sooo, I wonder if he is still starting recording this month, and when?


I'm really liking Matthew's singing in Kid Down The Well.  it's reminding me of Avalanche or older singing in a way.  The "and the kid down the well, that's me" part is excellent.  The song in general kind of reminds me of a MG classic like Apparitions or something.  I hear a little Life In Spite Of Itself too.  I think I'm hearing another must have choice to make the album.  So far I've got:

 

Los Alamos

Cold Water

Night Orders

We Have Done This Before, We Will Do It Again

Tiger By The Tail

Kid Down The Well

 

Harridan is on the lesser end but still the best out of the few songs I left out.  I don't care that much if Moment, Girls In Black and All You Sons and Daughters don't make it.  I wonder if Hornets is still in question?

Moment is my favorite because it hits so many sensitive spots for me.

 

It's probably the most radio-friendly out of the bunch, almost like "Us Remains Impossible".

I really enjoyed No Liars too, actually. Definitely more upbeat and has some interesting progressions as far as the song structure goes (the verse to chorus switch is great). As usual I loved the stripped down indie sound- almost has an Underdogs meets Ryan Adams feel to it for this one. Also, not sure why, but I really liked the lead guitar. 

 

The only thing that missed me about it was the end. Felt that it could have led into a decent little rock out at the end and instead it just ends sort of abruptly.

I'm so excited he's doing Cloudbusting.

I like how "Kid Down The Well" has it's tempo sped up, but it might be just a tiiiiiny hair too fast, needs to go down 1 or 2 bpm so it doesn't sound like the vocals are being rushed, needs that natural flow.

I've been staying away from the demos this time unlike the past two albums, I want that new material experience I had with Hospital Music and Vancouver... it seems like overall impressions are good. Do we know for sure if the album will be named Chaotic Neutral? I hope so, such a cool album title.

The funny part is "Cloudbusting" could easily pass off as a Matthew Good song. 

I hope he plays the piano part properly during the studio version though. 

 

No guarantee this will be on the studio album, it’s definitely good but still sounds more like the original than I believe Matt wants.

 

It must be very difficult to try and re-do a classic like this. In my opinion very few artists are successful in completely re-doing a cover, the best I have heard is Greg Dulli’s She Loves You (The Twilight Singers album), he also did a good job recently (with the Afghan Whigs)  on a cover of Every Little Thing She Does is Magic by the Police :
