Really Simple Songs Matt Nailed Perfectly

Recommended Posts

Matt sometimes records really simple songs (in the sense that it's mainly just a guitar and vocals with very little arrangements and sugar coating). Here are some that, to me, are perfect as is and would have been ruined if there would have been more added to them:

- The Inescapable Us

- I, The Throw Away

- All Together

- Omissions of the Omen

- Can't Get Shot In The Back If You Don't Run

- Dusk

- Running For Home

- Fated

- Flight Recorder from Viking 7

- Life Beyond the Minimum Safe Distance

- The Fine Art of Falling Apart

- The Man From Harold Woods

I'd almost add House Of Smoke And Mirrors to that list, although some other instruments kick in half way through, it still kind of has that feel.

Yeah I've thought about it too but left it out because of the instruments. I'd also add a lot of Rooms but wanted original versions :)

Yeah I know I make up rules along the way :P

All I can think of (besides anything before LOTGA) is So Long Mrs.Smith.

But to add songs that are mostly Matt/Acoustic that have a simple drum beat and bass/guitar effects here and there in verses or choruses but it's mostly just complimenting Matt.

Truffle Pigs, probably Matt's easiest song on guitar (Open Notes)

The Rat Who Would Be King,

I Miss New Wave,

Guns of Carolina,

Weapon,

While We Were Hunting Rabbits,

Bright End Of Nowhere,

Song For The Girl,

A Long Way Down,

Apparitions,

Like 96% of Hospital Music :P,

How It Goes,

Set Me On Fire,

Darling,

Volcanoes,

A Silent Army In The Trees,

Empty Roads,

Blue Skies Over Bad Lands,

Did I play the game right? Probably not. :P

Rules are meant to be broken!

I like your thinking! :P

Not in its original form, but the piano version of Rabbits is stunning.

Dusk and All Together have that feel for me as well.

Absolutely! The piano version of Rabbits is magnificient and chilling.

I agree - Girl in the War is stunning. It almost sounds like an original MG song because the lyrics remind me of some of Matt's songs.

Yeah, GITW cover was pretty impressive too. The build, both in the acoustic cover and the live band cover is perfect and I'd say it sounds like MG simply because Matt took it and made it his own which is really the only way to do covers anyways.

I'd personally throw the demo version of "Can't Get Shot in the Back" into this category.  I never really cared for the full studio version, because the version of just Matt and a guitar is so haunting - especially with the scratchiness of the guitar strings.
