Need New Music Recommendations

Recommended Posts

Hey everyone.

I've been in a bit of a rut lately, musically speaking.  I've just been listening to MG, The National, and podcasts, because I am so tired of the music on my iPod.  Can anyone recommend a new band to try out?

Some of my favourites already:

Matthew Good

The National

We Were Promised Jetpacks

Gaslight Anthem

Against Me!

Rise Against

Kings of Leon

July Talk

I just recently found Royal Blood.  They're pretty great.  But that's pretty much it.  Anyone know a band I should check out?  Thanks.

I'll throw you some of my favourites. Try and listen to them all the way through, they're worth it. I tried to show the heavy side/soft side for each band.

The bands/Artists get progressively heavier, I cannot STRESS this enough haha.

These are all my hidden gems, I hold them up there with Matthew Good.

I'll start with some acoustic work.

I've seen most of them live.
Give me feedback on which ones you end up liking & I'll send you other songs from the artists.
It's incredibly hard to pick 2 for each.

I'm surprised you know about Justin Nozuka. I think he is Kevin Bacon's nephew. His brother is a singer too, but he is too mainstream and is more for the teeny boppers.

Kandle Osborne, "Not Up to Me" (she is the daughter of Neil Osborne of 54-40 fame)

I like the underwater sequence in that video. It was beautiful.

Once in a while I like discovering new artists/bands and watching their youtube videos. Thanks guys!

^ I just realized the piano for Regina sounds like "While We Were Hunting Rabbits" piano version Matt does live..

Wow, you're right! The first 12 seconds of it sounds exactly like it. Interesting and weird at the same time.

Thanks! :)

I became a Jeff Buckley nut for awhile. Researching him and his father Tim Buckley, finding as many documentaries as I can. Collecting all his vinyl.

Sucks knowing he's not with us now because he had so much left in him.

"Sketches for My Sweetheart the Drunk" Sadly was an album that was first initially scrapped by Jeff due to him finding it very forced and uninspiring, mainly due to the pressure of topping his successful album "Grace", and having his record label poking him to make the next "Nevermind" and lean more towards songs that didn't have his unique vocal style, due to the 90's wanting more of that "I don't care if I sound good I'm too cool" grunge image.

Sketches for My Sweetheart the Drunk is a collection of polished studio tracks and four-track demos recorded by Jeff Buckley. Buckley was dissatisfied with material recorded in the summer of 1996 and early in 1997 and continued working on demo recordings to refine his sound. The album was to be titled My Sweetheart, the Drunk, but was never finished, as the rest of the band were traveling to meet Buckley at the time of his death.

Which is awful to think about, but it makes me believe he committed suicide. There are some stories that point towards it, but that's being a "Conspiracy Theorist" lol.

The weight of being "Tim's son" and trying to outdo "Grace" would have drove any artist insane. Which oddly enough the album he hated and didn't want anyone to hear ended up being his last release.

A few gems off that album.

This song is absolutely creepy though, like it was an unintentional (or intentional) farewell.

Actually since I have no FRIENDS and live on this site, I'll add this interesting thought-article for any Jeff fans to read.

Musicians Who Predicted Their Own Death in Song

Jeff Buckley's "Dream Brother" is said to have been written about a friend who was about to leave his girlfriend and child. In the song, he warns of the sadness to be had by following in the footsteps of Buckley's father, Tim Buckley. The elder Buckley was a promising young musician who had his career cut short by an accidental heroin overdose. He also walked out on Jeff and his mother shortly after Jeff was born. It's that last part Buckley is singing about, but he probably should have considered penning a few lines to himself regarding the "musician gone too soon" part. Or, did he?

Unfortunate Lyrics:

"The dark angel he is shuffling in."
"Don't be like the one who left behind his name."
"Asleep in the sand with the ocean washing over."

buckley2.jpg

What Happened Next:

We've never given relationship advice to a friend that involved any mention of a "dark angel shuffling in," so we're not sure how that first line would apply to a dude leaving his girlfriend, though we will concede that the second one fits. But the third? "Asleep in the sand with the ocean washing over," well, that's just pretty fucking creepy. Less than three years after the release of "Dream Brother" Buckley died. By drowning. This leads us to an obvious question: "Hey, Jeff Buckley, how about taking your own advice?" We're guessing the reply would be something like, "Hey, leave me alone you assholes, I'm dead."

I hope it wasn't suicide. It is strange that he had his boots on when he went in the water and it was during the night. That's an odd time to go swimming. You can't see anything. From what I read, he was in a happy mood before he went in the river. He was looking forward to recording new material for an album. I feel sorry for the guy who was with him. He must have felt so much guilt. He turned around for a second to do something and when he looked back towards the river, he was gone. That is so sad.

Jeff Buckley's mother, Mary Guibert, comes across as a very intelligent woman. I saw this interview of her talking about her son. I don't care for the host though. I look forward to buying the DVD/CD compilation 'Grace Around The World' on Amazon soon. I wonder when the movie about Jeff Buckley, that she is producing, is coming out.

Have you seen this yet? Only Jeff Buckley movie that's made at the moment. She yanked away the music licensing for it though so they had to work without any of Jeff's work. She's very strict with his estate, but I guess that's just being a mother and wanting to tell the best story for him.

I really do not like the "Love angle" made for this movie. "Allie" was never this involved with Jeff during the time of the infamous tribute concert, they kind of exaggerated it to add more to the plot.

And to jump into water fully clothed, listening to one of his favourite songs.. hmm I don't know, I don't like to ASSUME someone committed suicide because it's dark and not respectful (though I don't intend to be disrespectful) but.. when you look at the bigger picture of his death, just not a whole lot of things adding up. I still have the image of Jeff washed up on the shore with police officers surrounding his body stained in my head.. I'll always regret stupidly viewing that.

This is the actor who was SUPPOSE to play Jeff, he looks JUST like him, missed opportunity.

Reeve Carney.

Thanks for all the suggestions folks. I've forgotten about some of the artists you mentioned, so I'll be going through the lists and getting reconnected.

Have always loved Jeff Buckley. Such a shame that he passed away so early into his career.

That movie is next on my watch list. They should have chosen a different actor though, He looks nothing like Jeff. He doesn't do him justice at all. He was on Gossip Girl after all.

She sounds like a really good mom, yanking away the music licensing like that. She must have been doing it in his best interests.

Yeah, Reeve Carney looks like him. I never heard of that actor before. James Franco kind of looks like him too. He was pretty good in the movie 127 Hours. Maybe he would be a good choice to play Jeff Buckley. I heard that Johnny Depp was one of the actors on his mom's wish list. He is about 10 years older than him though. I don't know if that would be believable.

Reeve Carney played Spiderman on broadway, maybe the lack of acting caused him not to get the role.

I never thought I'd be so invested in a movie about a guy stuck between a rock, but "127 Hours" is an awesome movie.

Weird how she turned down help from Brad Pitt though, IT'S BRAD PITT!

In one of Jeff's documentaries, most of it is Brad geeking over him, it's adorable.

There ya go. :) I say watch both when you get time. They both take a different documentary spin on his life.

The first one digs a lot more into Tim Buckley and Jeff's early teen years.

Also worth the watch right here, gives me chills EVERYTIME I watch it. The footage might be in the documentary I sent above or another one, can't remember.

Also I don't know if you've ever heard this song "What Will You Say" but it's by far my favourite Jeff Buckley song. Vocally he does everything, absolutely everything. This is the best live version imo, you can find more on youtube of him performing it, this one is just audio. But this particular one is flawless.

Thanks! I just saw Everybody Here Wants You. Nice documentary. Ya, Brad Pitt sure likes him. I will check out the rest of those videos when I get a chance.

I like the first 57 seconds of Amazing Grace: Jeff Buckley. This looks like a good documentary. The video quality is really good too. Thanks for telling me about it.
