I second the guitar tab book, also a lyric book. I hope he's still releasing the Chaotic Neutral maps.

Just a few more sleeps until Friday. I have Matthew Good Friday and Saturday, then Protest The Hero on Sunday. 3 nights at The Vogue oh lordy.

Ok I just scanned through this Scott Helman's top songs on spotify. I wonder what kind of experience I'm in for in Barrie as I was planning to get there early and stake out a good spot up front. I think I'll probably end up feeling old Hahaa.

I certainly appreciate all kinds of music but this is way off my radar. I guess the good news is that it looks like the song lengths aren't very long and they seem to move pretty fast.

Is this guy on the rise up there, or pretty popular already?

Yes, Scott Helman appeals to young people. There are many, many people coming to the show specifically to see him and aren't familiar with Matt's music (or don't like it - I know, I can't handle it either). Whether people remember it (or want to admit it) or not, there was a time Matt was that kind of sex symbol to young people. Young girls crushing on Scott Helman and his bandmates (see Instagram and Facebook for evidence of this) definitely gets bums in seats which is all I care about when it comes to the opener. As long as more people come to the show, I am happy as it means MG can continue to tour and make money. And that means more shows and more albums for all of us. My personal taste leads more towards past openers like The Dears and Mother Mother but there have also been surprises like Dala, who I thought I wouldn't like but ended up being a favourite.

People have been comparing this kid to Justin Bieber which I think is ridiculous. Their music sounds nothing alike. Scott Helman writes his own music, is a technically competent singer and a talented guitar player. I have nothing but respect for him.

ha. justin bieber is exactly who i thought of when i saw him, but i couldn't name one bieber song tbh, it was just his look and age i guess (profiling  :o ). and locally, the show's in a bar, so 19+. what do i know...maybe the college kids are into this stuff. whatever. i'll be there for the main event.

To answer an earlier question,  I still haven't seen any other youtube vids.  Kinda of sad was hoping to hear some of the new songs early to see how they evolve and progress throughout the tour.  I think once we hit Vancouver and the bigger areas we will see more and more video surface.

The thing with Helman is that he's on Matt's label, and Matt's willing to help out a label mate.

At the Massey show last year, Helman walked out on stage (I knew nothing about him) and I immediately wanted to leave.  Just sorta looked like pretentious fashionable teenage acoustic-guitar singer-songwriter.  (The show was just him and a percussion guy.)

A couple of songs in, though, it was hard not to realize that the kid was geniunely talented.  I'm not going to say that it's something I'd listen to all the time, but I legitmately enjoyed the performance.

Having said that, after the show, I ended up walking past him and his entourage while heading back to Yonge, and I wanted to hate him all over again.  (So much pretentious fashionable teenage.... balh.)

Cool. Enjoy the concerts. Whenever I hear the name Protest The Hero now, it will remind me of the 'Buy Our Album' video. That video was fun. It reminded me of something that Much Music's Going Coastal would direct. I kind of miss that show. Maybe I will check out Protest The Hero at least once in my lifetime, to see what they are about. They look like a punk band. Maybe they're similar to Chixdiggit, Strung Out or Alexisonfire. I don't know. I'm just guessing.

I felt the same way after seeing that show. Also as a drummer I think that cajon's should all be burned in a massive tire fire-esque blaze.

Chilliwack setlist:

Harridan

Load me Up

Army of Lions

Born Losers

Kid down a well

Cold Water

All you sons and daughters

No liars

Alert Status Red

Hello Time Bomb

Los Alamos

Apparitions

Weapon

Encore:

Giant

Cloudbusting

Tiger by the tail

A bit of a funny concert, Matt was really quiet for most of it, (almost seemed lost for words) then all of a sudden got really chatty near the end of the main set. They made a last minute change to the setlist at the end (apparently they were going to play something else instead of cloud busting, or changed the order.... i figure they were running out of time, that maybe they cut a track out, maybe everything is automatic?). Anyone else at the show?

On his instagram it says.

Army of Lions

Born Losers

Kid down a well

Cold Water

All you sons and daughters

No liars

Everything is Automatic

Hello Time Bomb

Los Alamos

Apparitions

Encore:

Giant

Alert Status Red

Tiger by the tail

So I guess he did make a bit of a change. Looks like a good setlist though!

Harridan made a killer opener... Would have liked an upbeat closer (like automatic or girls in black), but for the most part pretty awesome. Wish I hadn't heard that he was reworking police cars for this tour, kinda got my hopes up.

Funniest part of the concert was after time bomb when Matt said: "playing that song is like going to work at the same job for 20 years, and the same customer comes in every tuesday.... and wednesday... and thursday"

also made some comments about how valley life isn't so bad (didn't realize he lived in mission), and how vancouver isn't really a city (but toronto is coincidentally..... definitely got a reaction out of the crowd with that one)

obviously brought up remembrance day, but given his general stance on things there was a moment when it looked like he might put his foot in his mouth (how there was no point to WWI, korean war, afghanistan, etc), but managed to turn it around in the end

other odd snippets: rambled about Cialis, and about how the best erection of his life was when he was dead for 43 seconds

aaaaand the guy at the end of the concert who used the break between each encore song to shout out requests for symbolistic white walls. Matt ignored him until right before tiger by the tail, when he simply said "nah"

There was a 40% off group on for those who hadn't bought tickets to the calgary show, strange days these are

I saw this on Group On :

"What’s good about opener Scott Helman: He’s a fellow Canadian whose bubbly hit “Bungalow” has garnered comparisons to both Vance Joy and Jeff Buckley."

Jeff Buckley??  Ahhh, I don't think so.

Darn. I could have saved $22 on the ticket price on GroupOn. Oh well.

So who is going tonight/tomorrow?

Any VIP?

It's 3am and with all the **** that's been going on recently I totally forgot to think of questions to ask Matt for the Q&A portion!

I really wanna know what size guitar strings he uses but that's such a nerd question. Anyone have ideas?

I'm probably most excited for the acoustic set, hoping for the rare puppies. What's the best way to record audio with a phone? Hit record, put it in your pocket & hope it doesn't sound like crap after?

And yes I just realized I censored myself at the beginning only to swear in the end, that's art folks.

I've always wondered about the pedals he uses, but again, I think like a nerd too.

I could see Blake being in a Maxwell coffee commercial. Definitely. Look at Matt's face in that photo. haha.
