Juno's Songwriting Circle

Recommended Posts

Tickets bought. So, let's do the math. Matt is performing at 12:00 pm on the same day as the Junos on Sunday, April 3 at 5 pm. Does that mean he will end his 20 year drought of not going to the Juno Awards?

It would be a waste to fly home right after the JUNO Songwriters' Circle. He has a nomination after all. Just to be on the safe side, I would set your PVRs in April.

But Matt did a lot of PR kind of stuff this year for the tour.

I don't consider Matt to need like a come back, because for me, as for most of you, he never wasn't big for us. But I'm guessing to have a kind of career resurgence/breath of new life, some PR stuff is necessary.

I really wish I could make it, but Calgary is definitely too far.

I think it would be good for him to attend the Juno's. Simply because he's liked and people respect him.  I think people would love to see him there and I think it would make for a better show.

I think he's very much respected as a Canadian Artist.  People listen to what he says.

I'm still kicking myself for not making it to the panel he was on during Ottawa's International Writer's Fest... I think it was 2005? Maybe before. So I really wish I could make it down to Calgary... :/

I think it would be great if he put himself out more for those kinds of things.  Like I said previously, it appears that people respect what he says.  Whenever I've seen him on TV or heard him on the radio for anything, there always appears to be that respect there.

I think it would be great if he made an appearance as  well.

Perhaps I am way off target here, though in my mind he decided not to go in past years partly due to the fact that he disagreed with the commercialism attached to the music industry in general, paired with the fact that he was living with some undiagnosed mental health symptoms which lead him to express his thoughts in ways which many now consider to be "difficult".  Since he has grown as an artist and individual, and also been able to seek treatment for his bipolar, he may have shifted his perspective somewhat on the Junos:  at least enough to tolerate going.  (Matt, if you are reading this and I am indeed way of base, my apologies.)

It would be great to see him take his place in Canadian music royalty.  We all know he deserves more cred than he gets, and benefit from his general avoidance of public accolades.  That said, it would be wonderful if he could find greater success, as selling more albums will only allow him more freedom to create beautiful music (though it might cut down on the amount he has to tour, and the venues he plays in).

I completely agree with all of this, with the exception of the last sentence.

Greater coverage may indeed lead to greater exposure and recognition, which will allow him to tour more. And it may facilitate greater support from the record company to allow him to do some more ambitious things during recording ... the tail end of the Universal years, as well as the one off Frostbyte kinda indicated that if a record company doesn't want to promote you, it can have an impact on your visibility and ability to tour. It was during that time that the cancellation of the U.S. tour happened due to a lack of viability, as well as the fact that the Arrows of Desire cycle seemed to be very poorly supported. That's my inference, and what I've gleaned from discussions and info on here, mind you.

Regardless of popularity or exposure, though, music sales are in the tank. Record companies have fundamentally miscalculated their place in the world, and that's something that Matt has communicated before. Unless you're TSwift or Beyonce and have guaranteed % or advances or are Adele and sell record amounts of albums, no one is making squat on album sales anymore. We're all superfans, so we own his whole discography in multiple formats, go to shows, pay for VIP, seek out autographed stuff ... but casual fans are generally gonna download All You Sons and Daughters on iTunes or torrent Chaotic Neutral or what have you. They're Philistines, sure, but whereas in 1999 they could be counted on to buy the whole physical album due to limits on format, that aint a thing anymore!

My point is, the devoted fans want to see him do well, have interacted with him and have a much more sober understanding of the financial realities of being a Canadian artist in 2016. I think that otherwise, name recognition alone is a bit of a slippery slope, because with it comes an assumption that you've made countless millions and live in a mansion with a bowling alley and have three sports cars in your three car garage.

But yeah! I totally hope, if Matt were to attend, that it would improve his public profile and thus lead to more artistic opportunities for him! As others have said, I feel like there is a general sense that he is a man to be respected, and for him to claim an "elder statesman" title would be fantastic!

Thank you for this reply:  there's a lot of food for thought, therein.  I tend to agree with you, in fact.  I suppose I was just thinking of the fact that touring is quite hard on an artist, especially one with such strong family ties.  Were Matt able to tour a bit less, I imagine that he would at least consider doing so.  Whether or not this would be a financial reality is the flipside of that coin; one which you so aptly explore in your response.

Oh, yeah! Totally! Being a musician and a family man is tough, and I wish that things were different in that regard. They need to get on teleportation technology, a la Star Trek, stat! :)

Matt's latest tweet:

Singing along to Ahead By A Century. Gots to learn it for something fun in a week or so. Channeling a little @gorddownie

Very interesting. If he sings this at the concert, I would absolutely love it. Matthew Good singing The Hip? That's the best combination ever! They are my favorite Canadian artists.

I got really excited when I saw that tweet. I love Ahead by a Century. I'm sooo down with a Matt cover. Or a collab of that.

I have a strong feeling that S. Helman will be doing a short performance for the Calgary Drop-In on Friday, March 31st during the noon hour. I'm so proud of that guy. Good for him! I used to volunteer there once a week serving meals at dinner.  Maybe I will swing by there on Friday and check out his performance.

Matt should join him! The clients and staff there are super nice. The clients always clapped for us after we served the meal. I enjoyed it there. I guess I should start volunteering there again soon.

Fresh from MG:

"Celebrating The Next Generation

Wednesday March 30, 2016

Art is subjective. Everyone has an opinion as to what they deem good or great or terrible. I have always been of the opinion that one wouldn’t take Francis Bacon and Mark Rothko and choose between them with regards to giving either an award. I guess I’ve always felt the same way about music.

Music is the most universal of human gifts. It is unmatched in our collective experience as a species, a bridge that gaps untold rifts that would otherwise never be bridged. Having said that, my views with regards to its transformation into a contest have long been known.

Obviously, given that, some have asked why I’m attending the Junos this year and participating in some of its events after years of refraining. The answer to that question is actually very simple. Given the state of the industry I think that now is a very crucial time to show support for a new generation of Canadian artists that must deal with both a vastly expedited process of creative growth and the ever changing landscape of how music is made, promoted, and consumed. More than anything, my presence, though slight in the grand scheme of it all, represents my belief in the ability of many of them to have substantial careers, to be able to make music for decades in their own country, and to celebrate the fact that we, as Canadian artists, should never view ourselves as anything less simply because we are Canadian artists.

Having had Scott Helman open for me on my last tour, the realization of what young artists now face in this current climate is something that has impacted me. Scott worked tirelessly on the tour, something that was not lost on the group of individuals he was opening for, all of which have been performing and making records since before he was born. Be it myself or Bones Hillman, who spent years with Midnight Oil, we all gave credit where it was due.

Somewhere out there is the next Joni Mitchell, the next Tragically Hip, the next Oscar Peterson, the next Wilf Carter. The obstacles they will face - if they are not deterred by them - are ones that I cannot even fathom. That said, celebrating their accomplishments is, for me, what is most important, no matter who wins or loses.

As far as my nomination goes - Death From Above is my pick. Hehe."

Great post by Matt, wherever that was posted.

Obviously I'm American but I have found myself listening to a decent range of Canadian artists. First and foremast Matt Good but I'm a huge fan of Hey Ocean! and I'm starting to get into Hannah Georgas. I've heard some Mother Mother and Yukon Blonde? and Big Wreck...it's good stuff.

I used to post on a message board with the drummer from Said the Whale but we disagreed on a few things and I haven't talked to him since. lolz.

I'm glad that Matt is supporting the Junos this year.  I know it's a silly award show, but it's a celebration of Canadian artists, at a time where our music scene is expanding.  I might even actually watch the show this year.

My intuition was wrong. Scott H. is performing a secret show on Friday at 4 pm at 207 8 AVE SW on Stephen Avenue Walk.

It is probably highly unlikely that Matt will perform at the Calgary Drop-In at noon tomorrow. But who knows... you never know. Maybe he will show up and will cover The Hip's Ahead By a Century. I suspect he wouldn't be performing a cover song at the JUNO Songwriters' Circle. It would be centered around songs that he wrote. It's a mystery. I will go and see who is performing there tomorrow, just in case.
