Has anyone checked out the new Netflix Original: Stranger Things?  It's pulling in really good reviews, but my roommates and I don't get it.  We've only got two episodes left, and to us the acting is just ok, the pacing is off, and we feel like we spend most of the time waiting for flat characters to catch up with what the audience already knows.

Just wanted to see what other opinions there were about it.

I'm about half way through, and it has inspired the same sense of wonder I got from films such as Close Encounters of the Third Kind, E.T. and others ... the child actors are fantastic - I can't say agree there's any flat acting going on. Winona Ryder is a little overwrought but I think that's her character.

A great little mix of Poltergeist, Close Encounters, Twin Peaks, Stand By Me/Stephen King in general.

I've watched like episodes 3-6 or something because I came home one day and Shay was watching it, so I only kinda half paid attention, but, I loved what I saw and can't wait to get a chance to hit it from the beginning. And that soundtrack. So good.

Uggghhhh.  I need to get on this STAT!

Anyone watch season 2 yet?  Thumbs up?  Thumbs down?

Not yet.  Just finishing up Mr Mercedes which has been fantastic.

Another similar one to Stranger Things is The OA.  It is awesome until the last 20 minutes of the final episode.

I'm four episodes in, James. Glorious return, hits all the right notes. Honestly, just seems like a continuation of the first season.

Also Coochie, if you listen to Brit Marling tell it, sounds like the divisive ending you speak of was built for a sequel. I quite enjoyed the OA as well, and I think while watching it, you can understand why it not only revels, but ends in the metaphysical.

Hear is hoping the soundtrack is good as well.

don't want to give anything away, but the soundtrack is fantastic! season 2 is definitely on par with, if not better than season 2 (I would say, that it is a little bit more uneven than the first season, but that the overall scope is way bigger than season 1... and definitely opens up the universe for several future seasons!)

I'm totally in love with Brit Marling.

How do I watch Mr Mercedes? I don't like torrenting cause I worry about viruses.

Do I need to watch season 1 of ST to "get" season 2?

You definitely do need to watch Season 1. In many ways, they're almost wholly dealing with the fallout of the events of Season 1.

The inspiration from the Silent Hill video games is pretty awesome. (ie; otherworld).  I really like this show. They really do capture the early-mid 80's vibe here. Love the D&D stuff, reminds me a little of ET.  Actually I feel like I'm watching a show that was literally made in the 80's. It's that good.

I'm very interested to see where they take Season 3 as well. The second season, in a lot of ways, provided some closure to a lot of the loose threads from Season 1. That being said, there are so many different directions they can go in now. maintaining the balance of paying homage to all those classic sci-fi elements without becoming derivative will be the true challenge I suspect.
