Underdogs Revisited Ideas

Recommended Posts

Considering BM Revisited & BM tour have been successful so far, lots of merchandise & lots of sold out dates. I wouldn't be surprised if Matt takes a trip down memory lane with Underdogs too after his new solo album later this year/next year. There's lots of juicy tracks on it that deserve rework.

I've made a quick list of the songs I'd like to hear, curious what everyone else's "Underdogs Revisited" tracklist would consist of.

1. Everything Is Automatic
One of my favourite MGB songs, but I've always wondered what it would sound like slowed down to a "Set Me On Fire" bonfire track.
2. Strangest One Of All
Lots & Lots of orchestra, I can picture it almost being identical to "Lullaby For The New World Order".
3. Prime Time Deliverance
Upbeat, quicker tempo, jazz & blues orientated. Zero Orchestra inspired.
4. Indestructible
Matt has always played a beautiful acoustic version of this song, with a full band added I imagine it would be a huge hit again.
5.Change Of Season

Just like Born To Kill Revisited, it wouldn't need that much of a touch up but deserves to be played again.

Now if only we can get a Last Of The Ghetto Astronauts Revisited movement going...

It's not a bad idea. Based on the live show reviews I kind of wish he would do remakes of the full album. Imagine re-worked versions of the songs you named plus Rico (we know matt doesn't like the song).   How about a new version of deep six?   Plenty of options to go with.  My ideal dream would be for Matt to book double shot venues  meaning he would play 2 nights in the same building night one Underdogs  night 2 Audio of Being.   I think it would be huge for ticket and merch sale as well as the future setlists since the band would now have a bigger catalog of songs to dig from.

Yeah that release was inspiring. During the holidays I've decided to play every record acoustically from beginning to end, just for fun. I got up to WLRRR. It's all doable.

I'd love to hear these songs revisited:

The inescapable us

Look happy, it's the end of the world

Invasion 1

Change of season

Deep six

Have to agree with this.  After some downtime since the BM tour I am thinking back how excited I was for the BM tour and merch, can't help but think Underdogs would be really cool in the same way with a EP, tour and some sort of throwback merch.  Really liking Decades and ready for the new album but wouldn't mind this throwback tour to happen after that...

I'd be curious to hear Matt's opinions on the BM tour now that it's complete. He was quite open about it scratching an itch that was more financial than artistic. I wonder if he came around on the idea of this type of tour, or if it was more work than fun?

I mean, I'm not saying I wouldn't go to this.

I would.

But I'm much more excited for new stuff. Beautiful Midnight was different. It held a lot of importance for me personally, was my first MG album, was pretty much my musical awakening when I was quite young etc etc. So I was super stoked for that.

Totally understand where your coming from! But I also bet a lot of people feel the same about underdogs. With Apparitions being on there I assume it holds a spot for a lot of people. I really do think it's a longshot but songs like change of season i think would fit great with this lineup, would love to hear stu's take on that guitar solo.

I'm sure Matt could redo any of the older albums and it would do well.  We've kind of already gotten that in a few cases when he reworks an old song to play live again, like Rabbits.

Personally, I'd love to hear Prime Time Deliverance again live, one of my favorite songs.

The problem is that as an artist, you can't keep going back to the remaster well, unless you're well over the hill creatively.  Matt looks to be in the prime of his career creatively.  I agree with Emma where I'd like to hear more new stuff.  There's no reason you couldn't work in another remaster album and tour in a couple years.  I'm sure it also has to do with whatever arrangement he has with Warner, and how well BM did in terms of numbers.

Don't want to shit all over the intention of your post.  Just adding my two cents.

Does anyone know if MG is considering this?  That would be awesome!  It would be great if he did this for all of his albums... although that might be wishful thinking.

Given how he dislikes that record, I highly doubt it.

That sucks.  There are so many good tracks on that album.  Maybe he could do something with Underdogs and Lotga.

I think he's overcritical of a lot of his work. As a songwriter myself I totally get it though. Artists change and evolve and some things become irrelevant to you or you've learned so much with time that you look back and go "what the hell was I trying to do there?". You were trying to convey something at the time and then you find it immature or you just don't connect to it anymore. In his case, I think it's more musically than lyrically but I could be wrong. But he is overcritical as far as I'm concerned. Underdogs is not Avalanche or Lights of Endangered Species but there are loads of great songs on it nevertheless. He seem to still like Everything is Automatic, obviously Apparitions and Prime Time Deliverance. He also played Indestructible on an acoustic tour a few years ago.

That said BM has always had a very place in his heart and he's always been very proud of that record so I wasn't surprised he reworked some songs and toured it from Giant to Running For Home even if it was 3 years before its 20th anniversary.

Very well said.  I agree.

Matt tweeted it's the 20th anniversary of Underdogs. Please let something be in the works for a revisited.

Yes I still think this is a good idea. Was excited for him to play My Out Of Style on a summer show but I don't think it ever came to pass.
