His songs actually work as poems. I've tried it. When he posted the lyrics for Can't Get Shot in the back if You Don't Run, i thought it was a poem.

That is probably why i like his music, it has some meaning and you can understand what he says in his songs. Sometimes when i listen to other artists i dont appreciate what they say... maybe because i dont hear everything they say, or maybe they just suck.

Matt seems to get a point across with his style of song writing, very much like an effective style of poetry.

i agree completely... for some other bands or singers, probably music is their only concern and they don't worry so much about the words... for others it is the other way around, they are more interested in the lyrics and the music is not good...

 

but in the case of Matt, both the music BUT specially the lyrics of his songs are the main concern... and i just love it ;)

He does what he does well, I think, since he sings about what's going on. In the world, in his mind, etc. His stuff works as poetry, as just spoken word, or as a song, it's rather amazing.

I think it's a state of mind. You know how madness and creativity can go hand in hand? Van Gogh, Virginia Wolfe, etc. Except with Matt it's not quite so mental disorder-ish. I really like everything that he writes, it takes me far away. ;)

He says that he doesn't call anything he does poetry, it's just stuff that he writes down. I'm the same way, if I wrote down anything I wouldn't call it poetry, it's just a journal with crappy formatting.

i agree that his songs are like poems. I actually just read the AOB lyric book with all the MGB lyrics in it on a regualar basis.

 

Thats one thing about listening to his music, you can listen to it over and over and get new interpretations and i love how the lyrics mean something thats missing in a lot of todays music.

That was scary, I just started reading this post, and as it finished loading (and then text appeared) A Long Way Down was playing in iTunes, at exactly the same place at the posted lyrics...
