MG's Thoughts of His Own Work

Recommended Posts

Can anyone tell me what he's saying in this Instagram post.  It seems to me he might be saying he considers Beautiful Midnight to be his best work which I would find interesting and quite surprising.  I've thought he has been hard on a lot of his records and Lights of Endangered Species was the one he was most proud of.

It interesting, I was watching some of that footage of MGB on Much Music during their LOTGA days and Matt seemed so excited and full of energy, then you see some of the late Underdogs, early BM era footage and you can see a change in his demeanour a little.  Things starting to wear on him.

I suspect that, like many artist's, Matt's feelings on his back-catalog change with time. One thing that I appreciate is that he does a fairly good job of avoiding the 'my next album is my best' syndrome that a lot of artists tend to fall into. I also appreciate that he is open and honest; he doesn't pull punches when discussing his own work, which is refreshing to say the least.

I used to think this was his attitude back during his Avalance / White Light Rock & Roll Review era, being really hard on his early MGB songs and now even with some of his Underdog stuff (which I consider some of his best stuff).  It's hard to say now, he has so much material, I could imagine going to a show to be just utterly fantastic.  Can't wait until March.

He's never wavered on hating on everything pre-LOTGA, most of LOTGA itself, and more recently Arrows of Desire.

Yeah, that sounds pretty spot on.

And you know what? I appreciate his candor.

As an artist myself, I've had a lifelong love/hate relationship with just about everything I've ever created. Come to think of it, I don't know that I've ever met another musician who didn't feel the same way. That being said, you'll be hard pressed to find a 'big name' band/artist/musician who'll give you an honest opinion of their work. And I get it, you need to 'support your brand' and all that jazz, but in regards to Matt, he's never dodged the topic, which is something that I both appreciate and respect.
