Ever take a while to get into an album?

Recommended Posts

MGB is probably my all time favourite band. I honestly believe that each album they put out was leaps and bounds better than the one before it (which were still amazing in their own right). But to be totally honest each album also took me a while to warm up to. I'd have to force myself to listen to each album at least 3 times and let them sink in before they grew on me, but then I wouldn't be able to turn them off! ;) I don't think AOB left my discman for six months once I got into it.

But I always thought it was weird that I liked the music so much but never fell instantly in love with the new material when it was released.

Does anyone else experience this?

I got AoB 2 weeks before it came out in stores because i know someone at universal. I listend to it once (wasnt even really listening. i put it on outside speakers and went for a swim) then never touched it for a year. i finally listened to it when i found out i had lent out all my other matt good CD's, then proceded to kick myself for not listening to it more

I've always gotten hooked on his albums right away. I bought AoB, Avalanche, and WLR&RR all on their first day of release and listened to them steady for at least two weeks. Especially this summer with WLR&RR. My routine was: Wake up to the cd, drive to work with the cd playing, then listen to the cd on a continous loop for my entire shift, anywhere from 5-10 hours.

This happens with me as well, but since I am so addicted to Matt Good, I now instantly like all his songs right when I hear them (maybe because his music has become that good). When I first heard Alabama Motel Room and Symbolistic White Walls, the first songs I ever heard from MGB.... I thought they were so terrible... and then a week later I was like, "wtf... this is awesome." So I'm strange that way i suppose.

I find its like that with alot of CD's. St.Anger was the same for me. I got it, thought it was terrible, but after a week or 2 i listened to it a bit more, and each time i listened i said "well THIS song is ok" to a different song every time. now I love the CD (although im sure some of you still despise it)

First album I bought was UNDERDOGS, cos I saw some interview on MuchMusic and they played the symbolistic white walls video - but my HMV didnt have that cd.

So I completely drowned myself in Underdogs for like a year ... then I went out to BC and picked up Raygun and LOGTA at A&B sound... soaked in those for months and months...

Lined up to buy Beautiful Midnight, perfect lyrics for where I felt I was in my life. So I had no trouble gettin into that one.

Loser Anthems was a great CD for me to walk to work to at 5 am, when the whole city was asleep ...

Audio Of Being once again was the soundtrack to my life and I remembered what it felt like to have a CD i couldnt stop listening to.

Avalanche however ... I couldnt get into right away. Sure I listened to it front to back often, but never really appreciated its beauty. Til now.

After consuming a copious amount of drugs one nite a few weeks back and having one of the greatest converstaions in my life, and even beautiful silences, I have realised now, that album is brilliant.

But, my point is, in a long-winded attempt, that I didnt appreciate it at the time, and never really got into it til now.

WLRRR i instantly felt connected to, especially cos I was excited for any and all new Matt Good.

sorry that was so ridiculously long

are you poking fun???

nah.

seriously tho, after doin shrooms and listening to avalanche, that album is mindblowing.

i know that sounds like pot smokers talk.

but really. the city lights at nite, intense convos about the state of the world, and that slight feelin of paranoia that creeps over your body before the buzz hits...this all was in sync with avalanche

Really, you see... I think that long time listeners are very refined and are immediately attracted to Matt's work on either Avalanche or WLRRR. I liked every song on that album the very first time I listened to it... I was take aback by how good it is....

i would have to agree with the first post. i ahve never not loved a MG album immediatley, whereas for example, i am trying to get into the new interpol record and trying my damndnest not to throw it out. I ahve so much new music i am trying to choke down, and really only a few albums stand out. Matts usic has always struck a chord within.
