U2 Allow Fans To Listen To New Album Online… Legally

Thursday November 11, 2004 @ 02:30 PM

By: ChartAttack.com Staff

U2 fans have always been eager to get their hands on whatever their beloved band is doing next. The earlier they can get it, the better. It doesn't matter, as long as they can get it first.

Last week, the very fans who pay U2's way through the world made the band's worst nightmare come true when U2's forthcoming album, How To Dismantle An Atomic Bomb, showed up online less than two weeks before it's set to hit the shelves. This is something that the band have feared since July, when a copy of rough-cuts from the album went missing in France.

Hoping to make the best of their predicament, U2 are hooking up with MTV.com and VH1.com to stream the new album online, as of Tuesday, November 16, one full week before the November 23 release date. The scheme makes it possible to listen to the finished album, while preventing it from being downloaded.

Same thing happened for All That You Can't Leave Behind in 2000. All the songs were on Napster a few months before the release date. Oh, how I miss Napster.

I've already heard it... they have a couple of songs which are really really good ("sometimes you can't make it on your own" and "yahweh")... and they have a version of "neon lights" by Kraftwerk (the song in the album is called "city of blinding lights"), one of my favorite bands ;)

I think a version of "Neon Lights" is on one of the copies of the "Vertigo" singles as well...
