as for genres...

rap is dehumanizing. by that, i mean mainstream rap. i abhor it.

country is just... odd. rehashed, mostly.

dance and techno is often badly done.

alt rock is overdone.

classic rock is good.

on the whole, you can find good music in any genre. you just have to look harder in some than others. there are artists that make washed out genres like dance and rap good by reviving it with that quality known to the discerning as MUSIC.

that's my take.

please feel free to shoot me down.

EDIT: sorry for accidentally posting this thread twice. it wasn't intentional.

my favourites would have to include:

Matthew Good/Band, Slipknot, Taking Back Sunday, Thursday, System of a Down, Johnny Cash, Alexisonfire, My Chemical Romance, OutKast, AFI and a whole bunch of other things.

I don't believe in genres. They do nothing but seperate. Maybe i'm just bitter to the idea because i don't know why Taking Back Sunday are emo and not rock, and Alexisonfire are emocore and not metal, or punk, or anything. i just don't get it.

Most muchmusic rap sucks, and 99% of country is TERRIBLE!!

muchmusic does suck.

and yeah, i suppose genres are limiting.

as for emo... i have a friend that hates emo. he says it makes people sad. now, 'emo' music helped me get through a phase in my life. namely, some of matt's sadder songs did. especially the fine art. everything has its time and place.

and yeah, genres are limiting. thanks for making me think a bit.

and system of a down is pretty cool, albeit weird.

and i've only heard a smidgen of afi, but they're pretty good too.

I find that genres don't really apply to the music I listen to. Or maybe I'm realizing that genres just don't work because they're too general.

Best bands/Artists:

Death Cab For Cutie

Thursday

Sigur Ros

The Shins

Matthew Good

Yeah Yeah Yeahs

Ben Folds

U2

Deftones

And that's all I can think of for now.

In the past few weeks, I have realized how narrow minded I have become to music. The only music I really listen to is:

U2

Matthew Good/Band

In that order.

In no particular order, other bands or musicials that I like but don't listen to much would be Bon Jovi, Coldplay, Sam Roberts, Nickelback (yeah yeah), Bryan Adams, Matchbox Twenty, Barenaked Ladies, Faith No More, The Tea Party, Sarah McLachlan, Chantal Kreviazuk, Vanessa Carleton, David Usher, Weird Al, and Nirvana.

As for genres, it's hard to really say? I can listen to anything except for Rap/R&B/Hip-Hop/Dance...pretty much everything that's in style right now? What I listen to can range anywhere from soft rock to pop rock to heavier rock. Not big on metal or punk either...some of it's ok though. As for country...it can be enjoyable, but I don't make a habit out of it, and probably can't match too many songs to the people who sing them. But I do listen to it on occasion.

I would like to add, though, that classifying music in genres is stupid and useless, and I only did it for the sake of this thread.
