What Ever Happened To Serial Joe?

Recommended Posts

I actually tried listening to ther first album a few nights ago. It's unlistenable. I think ryan's dad helped him out with lyrics... and they're all about nothing. My friend has had a few conversations with the former drummer (apparently his father is faculty @ George Brown in Toronto, so he gets a free ride). When asked about the band, he pleads not to discuss it. Ironically, he himslef feels it was all a mistake.

hahah serial joe, okay when i saw the name i was thinking about a big rapper but then i saw the picture and i totally remember serial joe. i think they were on a big shiny tunes cd back in the day.

Haha, yes. Their song "Mistake" was on Big Shiny Tunes 4.

I used to have that CD but it broke. I miss it, but not for that particular track. My Big Shiny 90's CD also broke. What the hell does MuchMusic make their CD's out of? Cardboard?

what the hell do you do to your cds?

Well....I'm not sure exactly how true this was, but a friend I met at university said she went to the same highschool as them, they disappeared for a year or two to be "famous" *cough* then show back up at school, a couple years behind their former classmates. Apparently they all got their asses kicked like 2nd day back except for the drummer, who was "cool other than being in a shit band". Now, theres always the chance this person lied to me, however, who would lie about going to the same school as Serial Joe? Might as well make up something cooler, plus, if you've heard them the second half of that story is pretty believable.

Yeah I remember Serial Joe, the first time I saw the Mistake video I was on acid and if anyone remembers the girl in the video, the one with the tarot cards, well, she really tripped me out because she looks almost identical to me, it was sooo fucked up, so at the time I thought, maybe I just had REALLY good acid, but I saw the video a hundred times after that and yep, the evil tarot girl still looked like me, freaky stuff, reminds me of this other time that I was flipping through a porn magazine and looking in the amateur section and I saw this girl that looked like me and for a minute I thought it was me until I really looked at the pic, I dont wear big hoop earrings and I dont wear blue, she had both. Ahh good times.

Holy fuck...the amount of sneering and elitism in this thread was incredible. Not sure how I missed this thread back in 2005. Anyways,  nothing against people disliking different music since it is subjective, but I mean...just fuck me. I don't own any of the bands CD's or songs, but if anything I'll at least give them credit for being nothing more than a set of teenagers who were still able to do what 95 percent of bands can't which is make a name for themselves, break into the mainstream, tour with some of the biggest bands in North America, and release 4 albums in 4 years. And I'll come out and say it- I like the song Mistake and the music video. Don't care what anyone thinks. And not that it matters, but given the like to dislike ratio on Youtube, I'd say I'm not alone.

I was roughly the same age as Serial Joe when they were "big" (heavy on the quotes). While I don't enjoy their early material (ie: "Obsession" is just... wow), I did like Mistake when it was released. It's a dreadfully simple song (the bridge is also pretty weak), but no one can deny that they came up with a good radio-ready hook.

It's likely that the label had a small production team who reworked/rearranged the song and coddled them through the studio process to record it, but it's still fairly impressive given their age.

I also pity them... their residuals are long gone, and they're publicly berated for even existing. If I had to re-live the immature material I was playing in bands at the same age, I would be mortified.

So to all the people who scream that they suck, etc - Send me a line - I would gladly give your material a listen, and I'll judge it for you. You're obviously a creative genius.
