July 28th Show

Recommended Posts

Was anyone lucky enough to catch Matt play in Edmonton last night? I couldn't make it. I heard Oh Be Joyful over the phone, but reception was poor and my friends were too far away from the speakers so it was tough to hear! hehe Sounded good, though I've never known Matt not to sound good.

It was a really good show. The audience was tame and except for a few people who got pulled out of the front it was mild. I'm transferring the audio over now, but I heard about half of it on the way home last night and it's all good.

Some highlights for me were Near Fantastica, Avalanche, Oh Be Joyful, Suburbia, Blue Skies Over Badlands and Advertising on Police Cars. There was a meet and greet after the show too, so a picture and now Black Market Surgery is signed. Definitely looking forward to the Fall tour now ;).

I caught it. And I could not believe the amount of people who turned out to see the show. And there were allot of minors. Which was okay, I was just surprised to see so many young people still into MG.

He opened with a stretched out version of Near Fantastica, Which was more than excellent.

The one major bad thing was the place was fully equipped with metal benches, all the way to the front. This made things almost impossible to see, because everyone who had a spot on a bench eventually stood up on them. I felt really sorry for anyone under 5 feet 10... I've been to many indoor and out door concerts in my life, and this one was by far the most difficult to see unless you squished in with the crowd up front, or was standing on a bench.

Other than that the show was pretty good. Matt rocked out like I haven't seen him rock in a long time...

i caught it, it was simply brilliant. i could not believe it when he played suburbia. i was floored. i was right up against the bar, front row and centre (if you saw a lighter during a few songs that kept going out, that was me.) then i was floored when he played avalanche, which was just pure beauty. then i was floored once more when he played advertising on police cars. so i was pretty content with the whole thing.

and i must say that for some reason, the extended slowed down hello time bomb, which i also heard in october when he played here, is really quite something. i never really enjoyed the song so much as when i first saw him do the whole slow, plaintive thing at the end and with the crowd singing along, simply spectacular. matt rocked out hard too, i had a few friends with me who came along just for me, and they're not the biggest matt good fans (they sang along only to everything is automatic) but they really really liked the show too. they said they really enjoyed his little kicks and stomps. which of course i think everyone does. but not only was the concert great, i also got to meet him and get a picture and an autograph and a little tiny chat, and i couldn't believe it. my friend and i were the last ones let in line for the meet and greet. talk about lucky.

anyway. the show was amazing, best concert i've ever been to, and that's saying alot, i've been to quite a few good shows. i may have more pictures later, once i get them developed (stupid one time use...) if i had to sum it up in one word, it would be: WOW.

For everyone that lives in and around Edmonton. Shaw TV (Channel 10) is covering K-days this year. So far they have been airing bits of the performances from Telus stage on the day after. So for anybody that wants to loiter in front of their TVs tomorrow, they will be able to catch a song from Thursday. possibly even an interview too...

Awww, he played Suburbia? That's my favourite of his songs and I had to miss it?

Now I'm not disappointed...I'm bitter.

Oh well, he'll certainly return to Edmonton for his fall tour...and even better, maybe come down to Calgary so I don't have to road trip to see him. ;)

Hell, I road tripped. I especially liked the 10 min. version of Avalanche. Oh Be Joyful is my new favorite live song. It's seriously one of the best tunes he played last night. The one dissappointment from the night was the fact that there might have been a lot of people to see the show, but I didn't get a sense that they were giving off a lot of energy. I could be wrong, I was outside the fence watching from Matt's left, I had a good view for the most part, I just didn't get a great feeling from the crowd.

Here's hoping the fall tour happens sooner rather then later!

Maybe it was just because I was so far away from the stage (50 to 60 feet) but was I the only one who thought the sound quality was just shit? I could not hear a fucking thing from Christian's guitar the whole night.

Then again it was an 8 dollar concert so...

I thought the sound was great, I just couldn't see to save my life. This super tall guy was standing on the bench in front of me, so I kept elbowing him. He thought I was trying to steal his wallet. Dumb.

Awesome set though. I almost passed out when he played Advertising on Police Cars. Ahhhh heaven.

is there any way you could share the concert with those that can't connect to the hub?

I uploaded an MP3 version of the show to YouSendIt (I am the one who recorded the show too). You can access the link here. It will stay up there for seven days or I think twenty-five downloads. I posted the link over in the Hub and Double Life as well, so if the link expires someone will have to re-upload it to YSI for others who missed it.

Thank you qursky! I was there and had an amazing time(other than the fact that I had to stand on my chair and crane my neck to the side if I wanted to see anything on the stage) I'll upload the link as well. ;)

Thanks for putting up another YSI link, it will definitely help in the long run. More of a chance for others to get it. I did the recording from the back but I had a friend watch my gear as I went up to the front. I was on the right side (at the start of the white fence) infront of Rich. It was nice to be able to have my cake and eat it too.

I am seeing if I can have the show edited as to improve some of the environmental sounds, but in the mean time this should tide everyone over.

The Sean's need to stick together ;)
