Near Fantasica Video

Recommended Posts

Someone should make a video.

That's actually a really awesome idea. Matt should have some sort of fan video contest. Hell, i'd do it even if there wasn't a prize. Hell, i'd do it now but i need to get some decent PC video editing software.

Time to give my brain a good workout here:

At the time Avalanche came out, there was a contest on MuchMusic to meet Matt. Someone who posted either at The Metro or on the official board won it, I remember this because she posted about it, I think her name was Jennifer Lynn.

Anyway, part of meeting Matt entailed a helicopter ride, so he e-mailed her and asked her if she was okay with waiving the helicopter ride and instead donating the money to Amnesty or one of the groups he supports. She thought it was a great idea and then informed MuchMusic of her decision.

I guess word got back to Much that Matt contacted her and they got in touch with Universal. They were upset because they believed that Matt had approached the winner and it was him who conned her into exchanging the helicopter ride for the donation.

The reality was, of course, that he was cool with either decision and had just suggested it. He left it up to her and she even went on record as saying it was her choice.

In turn, one of the higher-ups at Universal got pissed off at this and pulled support behind Avalanche, in effect axing the Near Fantastica video. There was also supposed to be a "21st Century Living" video directed by William Morrison, but that was scrapped for some reason too.

If I remember correctly, Matt said in a journal entry that the guy who pulled support from Avalanche was the person in charge of promotion for WLR&RR. This was all mentioned when he had an LJ with restricted access... I think that was around... January 2004.

About the different versions of NF:

It is correct that the short "radio edit" of the song is the original. Dave Porter made a post either on the old official board or Metro, saying this.

Matt was remixing the song for the House Of Smoke And Mirrors website and ended up liking the remix better. He put that version on the album and put the short one on the site, also using it as the radio edit.

Hope that answers all of your Near Fantastica questions.

you know.

if some selfish bastard won the prize.

we'd all be enjoying videos for NF and 21st century living right now.

i thought he DID have a contest or something when he injured his knee..

he said he would be taking submissions for an NF video..

anyway.. there IS an NF video i cant remember who made it.. its fan made of course.. and it's just one of those "culmination of all the old videos" type videos.. so it's clips of the other music videos while NF plays.. it was made in 2004.. because clips of Alert Status Red make an appearance..

He did mention the knee on the public site, but that's the reason he gave in his restricted blog. I am guessing the knee thing was either a cover-up (if you saw the Making of AoB you know how well Matt can lie) or else the injury was only going to delay the video and the behind the scenes crap is what caused it to be scrapped.

Yea, I always wondered that. I love the acoustic version from the Avalanche website, but still the original was my favorite song on the whole cd.

What about the "while we were hunting rabbits" video? How did that one come about and only appear on the dvd while the other 2 videos were scapped?

Damn that's all very interesting. It's amazing that the label would yank all support from an album over a botched contest... but then again the music industry has never been known for sensible decision making. Such a shame though, as Near Fantastica and 21st Century Living always seemed perfect for Matt's brand of video making.

Thanks for taking the time to recap all that for us...
