Matt Good emo? I really don't think so.

fearless is pretty emo, as is can't get shot in the back, sort of a protest song, and probably half the demos.

i really don't care to remember them right now.

I pay far too little attention to popular culture to even know what emo is. I just assumed it was some new buzz-word to replace "goth" and make said people seem more special.

It is now and always will be a word to describe little children trying to be diffrent by being exactly the same as everyone else. Dress in balck, talk about cutting yourself and you've got yourself a fad. The Southpark when Stan gets dumped and he joins the goths comes to mind. I must admit that I find kids acting this way much less annoying than the running thier mouth "thug" boys/"prosti-tot" girls that try to pick fights with me at work with thier "boys".

More like 15 year old girls but close enough.

The emo scene is so overexposed right now it's sickening. The entire genre nowadays is based upon appearance alongside relationship angst and despair. Don't get me wrong, I know who "real emo" bands are: Rites Of Springs, Fugazi, Circle Takes The Square and etc but I still strongly believe that tripe like Boys Night Out are emo as well.

And I hate all those MySpace kids out there who base their entire lives on adapting the emo/goth culture when they don't even know what the hell it really is.

Point is, that Boys Night Out are a watered down emo band with forced emotion; just like any of the emo garbage that has been in the mainstream over the past 3 years.

fugazi is emo? that's funny because i'm sure that that isn't what they were called like 15 years ago...

Alright, what do you want to call them? Post-hardcore? No difference since "true emo" falls along the same category as the independent hardcore scene.

fugazi was the first emo band.

which is cool, because front-man Ian Mackaye from Minor Threat is in that band.

and fugazi is awesome. emo has changed so much since then. what was once great, is now some watered down shit.

Really? How so?

What's your definition of emo?

Well just based on lyrics, anything unhappy can be considered emo apparently.

That sounds like fun, actually.

;) I'm an emo kid, non-conforming as can be. You'd be non-conforming too if you looked just like me

dan #2.

lolz

love you too!

This thread is basically whiny guys whining about how much they hate younger boys who listen and dress a certain way. Very pathetic.

Anyway, i don't really know how emo is any different from what punk or new wave became. People saw it, and emulated it. You're just conforming to a look that was at one time that of a non-conformist.

Frankly, i don't give a shit. I wear eyeliner sometimes, i listen to Taking Back Sunday and Thursday, i have hair that is longer in someparts than others, and pink is my favourite colour, but does that mean shit all? No. I'm doing what i want to do, i look how i want to look and i listen to what pleases me.

(and i still maintain that My Chemical Romance cannot be considered emo, as they do not write songs about breaking up with their girlfriend. Their songs and albums tell stories.)

Any band that writes a song called "I'm Not Ok (I Promise)" is treading close to the emo waters. Plus, the whole make-up thing works against them, but more in a Robert Smith kinda way.

Do you know the Three Cheers For Sweet Revenge story? Because if you do, it will all make sense.

slayer used to wear makeup. i'm pretty sure they're not emo.

yeah, but that's not what I said.

Kiss sure as hell isn't emo.

It's all in how you wear it really.

I think another example would be Modest Mouse. They have lyrics that are not far from being consistent with whatever emo is, but are a band that shouldn't be regarded as emo.

and

at the same time, bands can have emo lyrics and not be described as emo

example: alexisonfire.

they're not far from being emo, but they're pretty difficult to set in a specific genre

Not to pick on you guys specifically, but I notice that tends to be the trend. Calling a band 'emo' is an insult now, it's replaced 'sellout'. However if it's band you like there not 'emo'. They may be like emo, but there is something that sets them apart.

EDIT - Like Mrs.Jesus said "genres are fucking stupid

either it's good, or it isn't" If you like it, listen to it, if you don't, then don't. But if you're going to say a band sucks, don't say that suck cuz they're 'emo'. At least have a brain and think of a good reason.

I don't really see a problem with that. I don't like music that is commonly referred to as emo because it's just not my thing. And since most emo bands share the same basic sound, obviously I'm not going to like the vast majority of them. It's not a kneejerk reaction, I just don't like that genre. Same goes for other genres as well.

First off, many emo bands are redundant, yeah, and i think that's where a lot of shit comes from, but there are a few great ones out there, but go on myspace or purevolume, and you'll see kids with know knowledge of musical theory playing the same chords their friends bands plays.

But as for the story, i read about it over a year ago, when the album first came out, so this is all off the top of my head.

Two Bonnie&Clyde-esque lovers get shot up in a gunfight, he dies, she doesn't. Being the scum that he is, man ends up in hell, but throws a hissy fit because he's not with what'sherface any more. The devil's all like "man, quit your crying, i'll cut you a deal. Bring me the souls of 1000 evil, terrible people, and i'll give you a second chance at life," and then there's this whole thing with what'sherface moving on to some other scumbag and something about a shootout in a graveyard. As i said, it's been quite a while, but the entire album tells this story.

There are a few subplots, with a homosexual old man and something about poison.

I bet you could find a way better description via google, since i can't remember it, and i haven't heard the album in a while.

that's my point.

emo is now defined by sound not by lyrics.

that's why some of matt good's songs can be classified as "emo". he talks about... well emotions.
