First of all, these are not Demo, it is song from previous Matt albums...

Ocean, Brand new Tune comes from "15 Hours on a september thursday"

Dancing Invisible, Heather's Like Sunday comes from Euphony

As long as you were mine and Casual Walk comes from "Left of Normal"

This link should clear this up: http://www.geocities.com/matthewgoodht/

Those discs have been on constant repeat since i received it... very good stuff, wondering why Matt don't release some of those song or play it live... song like "The Ocean", "Parable", "If Birds don't fly straight", "Folk Singer", "Requiem for Rosemary"

Er, no...these are demos as well. They're "demo recordings" or "demo tapes." Matt recorded them independently as "demonstrations" of his work in an effort to get signed to a major label. We've been calling these songs the MG "demo's" for ten years now, and just because some geocities website says otherwise is a ridiculous notion. Hell, even the website is sort of on the right track:

"The CD 'release' known as History Teacher is a compilation of demos, albums, and EPs that preceded Matt's emergence onto the public scene with Last Of The Ghetto Astronauts."

And just to clarify for the people that *don't* know? That History Teacher "release" was also illegal (though I will say that whoever is making copies of it in exchange for a charitable donation is on the right track. Kudos to them) Matt hasn't started releasing other "demos" until very recently (ie: 2004) so I would say it's still perfectly alright to refer to the songs that predated his Astronauts release as "demos."

And with a note to the poll: I favor Parable myself:)

Thanks for clearing that up by the way.. i vote Parable also (or maybe if birds don't fly straight)... but still, i though it would have been called some album or something... since you can produce an "album" in your basement without any record company.

And since the guy that make those cd doesn't even ask for any money... not even for shipping (only ask for a donation, which i really think Matt would agree... if he haven't already) so i don't know if it's really illegal.

Best way would be to ask Matt

For the purposes of the poll I said Dancing Invisible.

It was the first one I got and it hits me so hard everytime I hear it...

the lyrics just hit home.

But for me it's either Coming Out in Purple or The Last Poem's Poet.

I don't need to ask Matt. I've been around long enough to see it all happen. The "History Teacher" compilation CD was created by a gentleman without Matt's permission around 5-6 years ago. The original demo tapes that the songs come from are legal copies. The History Teacher CD is not. Original copies of the history teacher CD are silver plated CD's with full colour artwork. When the CD's were first released, there was a huge scandal that centered around the preceeds of the sale of the CD, and who was getting paid for that sale. It has since been dealt with. Matt encourages his fans to find copies of the songs, but would prefer that you don't pay for them (ie, don't buy copies of History Teacher CD-R's on eBay)because he will not see any royalties from the sale of these songs....many of the songs are available for free if you simply ask for them.

However, because whoever is running this website NOW (ie, 2006) is taking donations and helping out a good cause, I don't see that Matt would be upset by this. In fact, he's probably wondering why he didn't do it that way to begin with (instead of making a post on the MGB website requesting that fans find some way to get the songs without actually paying for them).

As for the issue of "demo" records. Yes. It is fair to call them albums. I'm just saying that you shouldn't discount the use of the term "demos" because that was their initial intention. It's not that big a deal, but I just thought I'd say something about it.

*done ranting now*

That guy didn't make History Teacher, he's just offering copies of it to people. What the original guy did was illegal.

Technically, the "new" copies are illegal as well. It doesn't matter whether you charge or not - the distribution of copyrighted material without consent is illegal. It just happens that Matt doesn't seem to mind, so long as nobody profits off of it.

Well if Matt doesn't mind and he owns the copyright, than it isn't "technically illegal" because he gave permission to acquire the songs through these "illegal" means.

Woot! I'm glad I'm not the only person who likes those two.

They're ridiculous, but they mean a lot to me.

I've felt just as disorganized as those thwo songs are.

Maybe it says a lot about me, I don't really know. but it's a style I'cve never heard before.

And on the History Teacher note. I remember Matt saying back in the day that he would prefer people didn't pay for them because they're not worth paying for... As well as him not seeing any money out of it.

yeah from what I remember he hated most of those old demos and didn't want to release them in anyway because of which...

edit: oh yeah and I prefer Waiting for the Great Destruction... you can't beat the lyrics..."Could I walk out into traffic if I promise not to make a sound?" awesome...
