Where And When Did You First Hear Matthewgood

Well I haven't posted on here yet so I figure this is the obligatory first post.

 

I believe I first saw "Hello Time Bomb" on MTV2 while I was a sophomore in high school. However I was a sophomore in high school 5 years ago so that time frame doesn't add up, and come to think about it I saw the "Carmelina" video debut on Much right after I first got into Matt, but I'm digressing here because I'm pretty positive I saw "Hello Time Bomb" while a sophomore in high school. I thought, "Well this is kind of catchy but this band seems a little disturbing."

 

Then not a week or two later I saw the "Load Me Up" video and thoughts, "Well this is kind of catchy but this band seems a little disturbing."

 

Then I went on one of my "I need to discover new music" binges and "Beautiful Midnight" was on my Christmas list. Sure enough Santa Claus came through and I listened to the album and I thought, "Well I don't like this very much," and tucked it away for a couple of months.

 

Then on a retreat (went to Catholic school, don't you know) I was listening to the album for the first time giving it a real chance on the bus ride through my headphones and was blown away by it, particularly by "Suburbia."

 

From there on in, I suppose my story's the same as a lot of people from the U.S. I bought the other albums off of eBay or HMV, bought Audio of Being as soon as I could after it came out, was so excited about falling in love with this band like I never had before and then... they broke up.

I would have to say Hello Time Bomb. I didn't really think much of the band until a few years later when my sister bought the Audio of Being. I was hooked.

Saw the video for "Everything is Automatic" when I was just sort of bothering to watch Much Music on a regular basis.

 

Initially, I hated it. Not sure why.

 

Then I realized I had no good argument for why I should dislike it. Then I picked up Smash... Y'know, that mix cd with all manner of random artists on it?

 

EIA came on through headphones, got into my brain, and that was it. It was curtains.

I was watching MuchMusic when I was getting ready to go skiing in Kimberley. I think it was Feb. 98 or so, and Apparitions came on, I was hooked after that. I now own every album except for Lo-Fi B-Sides and I've seen 5 shows.

I was shopping for new music few days after everything i owned was stolen out of my car, buddie of mine says you should listen to this (last of the getto astronauts) I've been hooked since then. And as cheesy as it is I use his music to get throught crappy times in my life, and for some good times too. I am still listening, and reading his blog, He has a great mind and more of the best is yet to come.

I remember happening across his Manifestos when he was just coming to the end of writing them.

Someone on some other forum posted a link to the Weapon video and I instantly fell in love. Since then I downloaded most of his stuff and recently started buying some of it, but that leads to loads of shipping charges and all that over here. Still, I will get all of the albums at some point.

I remember hearing singles from Last of the Ghetto Astronauts on the radio in Vancouver (Alabama Motel Room, Symbolistic White Walls).

 

Then I remember when Everything Is Automatic came out and was played a fair bit on Montreal radio (well, on CHOM anyway). The Hip was my favorite band, I remember thinking that the music was in the same style, so I liked it right away.

 

However, at the time I was more into Jazz since most mid-90s rock music sucked (on radio anyway), and I wasn't listening to the radio much. In the early 2000s when good rock came back, I found MGB and MG again with Audio of Being, but I only became a big fan by the release of Avalanche. I remember thinking that it was a sure sign that our world was screwed beyond redemption when Avril Lavigne won a Juno for Album of the Year that year instead of Matt, but at least they gave him a nod for the Weapon video (I know these things are political, but anyway...).

 

Since then I have purchased all of his albums (some twice) except one, and I have bought the Avalanche LP, and many more MG items. I have stopped short at shelling out $200 for Lo-Fi B-Sides on Ebay... maybe some day, although I was thrilled when Matt included it on In a Coma.

 

He is definitely my favorite musician now, and I like all of his work, especially some of his earlier work which I only appreciate now. His two solo albums were fantastic, and I look forward to the next one.

My first Matt Good exposure was the video for "Everything is Automatic". The first couple times I saw it I thought it was an okay song, then I just didn't like it all. I liked Indestructible and Appartions well enough, but I was 13 and didn't have a lot of money and was listening to music I now consider horrible.

 

Cue 1999 and the Hello Time Bomb video. Thought it was a fantastic song, great video etc etc. My dad bought the album and I promptly stole it and fell in love. I heard "Everything is Automatic" again right around that time too and wondered how I could ever hate that song. I've been hooked ever since then.

mine was thanks to the power of good ol' radio and CFOX. i heard "Symbolistic White Walls" for the first time on the Fox and when I tried to look for the band on the internet, it only came up with "Dave Matthews Band" links. Oddly enough, thanks to that, that's how I discovered DMB as well. Apart from that, I dragged my friend to the Coq HMV to see them perform. So, that's how it all began.

In 1996 i was 14 and A friend suggested we check Matt (with band) out at a now demolished club in Kitchener called Mrs. Robinsons. We arrived at the venue and found out it was sold out and 19+, therefore we did what any mischevious kids would do and snuck in. Big Wreck Opened and they were awful, now I like big wreck now but then they were shit live. Then Matt came on something about his performance stuck with me and I couldnt stop humming the closing track which if I recall was symbolistic white walls, So I went on the hunt and finally found last of the ghetto astronauts at a little place called Encore Records and absolutely fell in love, To date I've probably seen about 20 Matt Good shows and I own almost everything he has released.

Wasn't until sophmore year of college i randomly downloaded "the war is over" w/ omissions of the omen.... after that its been non stop ever since.

I was with a friend in his car and he threw on Haven't Slept In Years. I've been hooked ever since. That was 1996/97. In 1999 I saw them for the first and only time Live. It was at a small bar in Peterborough, Ontario called Sin City. Awesome way to see them, only about 100 to 150 people there.

I *barely* remember this, I'm not sure if it really happened, I have a notoriously bad memory, but I swear my elementary school took us to a Grizzlies game once, and before the game, Matthew Good Band played a set.

 

I wonder if anyone could confirm that he's done something like this?

In early 1997, my girlfriend at the time was on vacation in Vancouver when she heard Alabama Motel Room on the radio. She picked up LOTGA second hand and brought it home (to Winnipeg).

 

I knocked both of us on our asses. That is, until Underdogs came out and blew that right out of the water.

I actually was watching an interview of Dale Earnhardt Jr. and they asked him if he could name a band that he likes that nobody has probably ever heard of (in the US of course) and he said Matthew Good Band. I kept that name in my head and eventually had the opportunity to get Beautiful Midnight, which was the easiest of the albums to get in the US. I loved it and continue to be amazed by everything Matt comes out with. He shot up my list to be my favorite musician and will always remain there.

 

Unfortunately, the thread by SOLID GOLD where he/she/it was bitching about Earnhardt Jr. being thanked on In A Coma was locked, so I'll take this opportunity to say, to this individual, to please have a nice slice of STFU.

Math class in highschool. A friend lent me "At last there's nothing left to say" (the class was quite boring)and then at the same time I put on his headphones and started to listen to MGB. It was pretty sweet ;) Reading "Porno Safari" while I listened to Carmelina---Oh man those were the days.

I was sitting at home watching MuchMusic (which we'd just received) in probably '99 or maybe early '00 when the "Strange Days" video played and hooked me. It was completely unlike the boy band/syrup bullshit I'd been forcefed by MTV - and I loved it for that. I'm very thankful that I got MM then, since Matt's music has helped me through some trying times. I was lucky enough to see that video, "the Future is X-Rated", "Anti-Pop", and "Carmelina" on Much as well. I think I'll go pop In a Coma's DVD in, as I now have a yearning to see them again.
