You guys should really check out the Arctic Monkeys. Their first CD, "Whatever People Say, That's What I'm Not" was released in North America a few weeks ago and it's definitely rocking. Their official website (which you can Google at your leisure) has a few videos up and you can listen to the songs.

if i hear any more about the goddamn arctic monkeys, i'm going to ....

Slate.com said the new Arctic Monkeys CD was perfect.

Not that I really trust their taste in music, but eh. It's the only reason I really got that interested in the CD in the first place. It's definitely far from perfect, and it lacks the sort of structure that you see in really good albums (i.e. a definite beginning, middle and end, etc...). Nonetheless, it's pretty good for a debut album. It'll be interesting to see how the band goes from here. Hopefully their next album will be better.

This is SO weird. A friend of mine and I swapped burnt mix CDs today, and on hers was a bunch of Arctic Monkeys songs, and I love em. Weird coincidence.

Edit: I like "When the sun goes down"

They're nice, the album has seem really nice tunes. But they're far too hyped! What the hell is going on with the music business these days? It makes no sense. But then again, when did it make sense? Ah, nevermind.

these guys are shit. i've got the album and its awful. if vaccuous pop music is your thing and you listen to whatever music magazines tell you to, i guess this is your bag.

whenever somethings an immediate phenomenon and explodes into our consciousness via the media, don't you think to question that at all? sure that single's pretty catchy.... but the rest of the album? it might be catchy but that certainly doesnt make it a worthwhile listen.

if you want something with more substance, listen to maximo park, blur, suede or pulp for god's sakes.

Suede, Pulp, and Blur were media phenomenons and I'm sure inexperienced fellows such as yourself were saying things like that back then, too. You've obviously not listened to any of them as they sound nothing like Arctic Monkeys and haven't had substance since Dog Man Star, Different Class, and Parklife. The fact that you put legendary brit pop names next to amateur newcomers SCREAMS "Look at me, I'm eclectic!" I've seen it a million times. Gets old.

You have the album, yet criticize those that have the album? Or you haven't listened to a note and you just don't want us to know your mutant power of being able to pick up audio signals with your enormous brain for fear we will turn you in to government authorities and your gift will be exploited for cruel intentions.

Damnit, I get so damn tired of these self-righteous posts that are more conformist than the bands they criticize. It's more derivative than the Arctic Monkeys could ever be.

I imagine I'm sitting at a restaurant and instead of ordering food, you order music. And then there are these waiters who don't actually work there but come up to refill your glass anyway with their own urine.

edit: Now I'm off to listen to The Pixies, Death Cab For Cutie, The Smiths (The Queen Is Dead), and The Cure (Bloodflowers is the best!!!), and Straylight Run. Am I speaking your language now, Susan?

so im guessing you don't like what i said?

i agree, suede were really big at the beginning of their career, but as far as pulp and blur are concerned, it took them years to actually get noticed. maybe i should've clarified: i don't like instant media phenomenon when the band hasn't even put out a record.... or even for a debut. so no, i wouldnt have approved of the shitstorm suede started until i gave their record a listen.

i really dont care what you say about suede or pulp, especially since i haven't heard their entire catalogue and wouldnt claim to have. but i don't think that's necessary in order to say that they have substance. as for blur: saying that blur lacked substance post-parklife is alarming and confusing. saying that i've never listenned to them because i think otherwise is juvenile and you're pulling it out of your ass.

but that's not even the fucking point. the point was that the bands i had listed had substance at some point or another, and i was offerring them as alternatives because the arctic monkeys have no substance, and thats something you never botherred to contest, strangely enough.

i'm not eclectic. nor do i profess to be. i'm pretty goddamn anglo-centric.

jesus christ, i said the band sucked and now you're angry at me for it?? i listenned to the album, i gave my opinion. do you even like the arctic monkeys yourself?

how can one not conform? i'm conforming to lots of things and its unavoidable.

i didnt buy the album, that would be nonsense. i have a copy on my computer. mmm piracy. i listenned to it more than once. it sucked. its essentially the same song on repeat 13 times. "i got real drunk wif me mates and went to a club to dance and saw some pretty birds we wanted to stuff and ran into the bobbies and got kicked out man we're silly boys and hooligans, etc, etc"

no you're not speaking my language because i dont listen to any of those bands save for the cure. you're name dropping just as much as i am, although, yours is dignified because its only for humor purposes. straylight run and death cab for cutie? you've got to be joking.

these are the facts: the record has no scope, no wit, no depth and is a waste of time. instead, it replaces those things with empty gestures, safe sounds, by-the-numbers music, and numberous tracks having to do with boozin' and brawlin' that i don't really care for. these songs remind me of something the firefighting students at my school would come up with. if you would like to talk about the arctic monkeys at some point, please do so. otherwise, may i suggest you start a "i hate borntohula" thread elsewhere.

I have 2 tix for the sold out March 21st show @ the Phoenix....the day after Oasis in TO.

Anybody love them more than me and want to buy them?

I should go as they were a gift....maybe i'll take borntohula so he can see how much fun it is to hang out with pretentious hype mongering rock snobs that listen to shitty music with pretty hair cuts....cause i dont want to suffer it alone!

Suede hadn't put out a record when Brett appeared on the cover of NME with the "Best New Band in Britain" tag line. Arctic Monkeys went the Dane Cook route to success and went with online distribution. Much like Suede, the strong majority of album tracks were already available elsewhere. (of course, this is where the comparison ends. Suede is one of the best bands in the last 20 years, IMO. Arctic Monkeys is one of the best bands this week.)

saying that i've never listenned to them because i think otherwise is juvenile and you're pulling it out of your ass.

I didn't (and wouldn't) say that, but a similar remark you made is what irked me initially. I'd say you're eclectic and that's not a bad thing, either. If you were to call them "London Suede" you wouldn't be.

the point was that the bands i had listed had substance at some point or another, and i was offerring them as alternatives because the arctic monkeys have no substance, and thats something you never botherred to contest, strangely enough.

Not all good bands have substance. Sometimes it's as easy as thinking of a style no one else has yet. Arctic Monkeys haven't done this, and I won't contest that. They are imitators who come at you with as many riffs and catchy lyrics as possible. It gets tiresome after a few listens to be filed away until it pops in your head a year later.I think for what they are at least going for, Art Brut does much better (if you'd like to sample them).

jesus christ, i said the band sucked and now you're angry at me for it?? i listenned to the album, i gave my opinion. do you even like the arctic monkeys yourself?

No, not at all. I didn't appreciate the comment about buying into hype and thinking for yourself, going with the magazines, followed by suggestions I already own and have owned for quite some time. The fact that you don't like it is fine with me. Couldn't care less. The fact that you suggest that anyone who does is inferior? Yeah, that bugged me just a tad. I don't think you noticed it by the way your response reads, so my apologies for the harshness, but that's what it was.

straylight run and death cab for cutie? you've got to be joking.

I am. I can't stand either of them. Arctic Monkeys aren't absolute crap, but I find them more enjoyable than the many other british hype machine acts recently. You hit the nail on the head as far as their song content and style goes.

otherwise, may i suggest you start a "i hate borntohula" thread elsewhere.

I don't hate you, just didn't like what you said.
