Generation X-wing

Alright, so it's my favorite Matthew Good (Band) song, I have got to admit that. But the meaning has me guessing a bit. I suspect that it's about being a loser, knowing that and being alright with it. I am confident in that, but the wording in it is what gets me sometimes.

1) Venus was a flytrap, the man you loved devoured

Is this referring to... the roman Goddess of Love? Like... love devoured him?

2) Generation X-Wing, that's gotta be the Death Star.

I know what generation X is... and that he's making a comparison by adding -Wing to it... but what is the Death Star?

Just this and... other parts of the song make me wonder. What do you people think\know?

death star and x-wing are star wars references....I thought everyone knew that, and I'm pretty sure you're looking waaaaay to deeply into the song, I'm pretty sure Matt just threw it together about being a loser. Dont think there is any kind of weird undertone

I think Gen X-Wing is about teenagehood...Matt was a teenager when 2 of the Star Wars came out, dreaming about a friend's sister sexually, not being cool and not caring...etc..

like many MGB songs, it will mean different things to different people.

at some point in the past, either in a manifesto or a Notes From the Road, mg himself expressed that what he thinks of a song has no bearing on how it will be interpreted. the quote was something like, "nevermind what i'm thinking... what are you thinking?"
