Philosophy

Recommended Posts

i'm writing a essay for my philosophy course on social and political philosophy.

for research i need to ask people a bunch of questions, so anyone who could answer this would be my hero forever.

1. What is justice and can it be defined?

2. What problems (social, cultural, etc) arise when trying to define it?

3. Do you think justice exists locally and globally? Can it exist?

4. Do you think justice has advanced from what it was in the past? or do we still face the same problems and issues?

thank you so much.

NEVERMIND.

bah, i'll still post:

justice is a human created subjugate used in conjuction with punishment of those that do things that society has deemed wrong.

As right and wrong are wholly controlled by what a society feels to be acceptable, justice fluctuates depending on the thoughts of that society.

Justice can not exist locally or globally, its a dog eat dog world kids, it doesn't matter how much pretty glitter you paste onto it.

Are we any more advanced today in regards to justice than we have been in the past? I don't think that can asked, as we would need some idea of what perfect justice would be, and that's something beyond the capabilities of the human mind.

1. Justice is supposed to be the 'balancing' of some sort of metaphysical scales. This makes it differ from pure vengeance. If you do something damaging to society, then the justice system says you must give back to it in an amount roughly equal to how much you hurt it. Stealing hurts society less than murdering someone, and this is why the penalty is less severe. Less punishment needs to be inflicted to 'balance the scales'.

2. What is 'socially acceptable' differs from culture to culture, and even from individual to individual. A good example is Dr. Kevorkian. Some people feel that he did nothing wrong, and that his actions were not socially deplorable. Others feel he committed a crime against society. Thus, how is he to be judged, and what justice, if any, should have been affected upon him?

3. Because of the differing views accross cultures, it is difficult to enforce a universal justive. In Afghanistan, women are treated in a way that would be horribly unjust in Western society, and yet they are not punished for it. Therefore, though most societies have a justice system, they often differ so greatly, that I don't think they can all be called part of the same global justice.

4. It has evolved in some ways and devolved in others. There really isn't much more to say. For every abolishment of the death penalty, there is a corrupt judge or lawyer. For every advance in DNA evidence, there is an appeal loophole. I could go on about this for a long time, but I'll stop here.

I'll write you an essay:

This is my essay and it's about that sexy hunk Jarrod. I mean, could anyone ever be so dreamy like Jarrod. I knew I loved him the second I saw his gorgeous eyes and nerd glasses. I mean, his hair is just perfect! He's so dreamy. I like to dance. And when I dance I like to think of Jarrod. He makes me so horny, I mean, DAMN! Anyway, yes, he is the bomb. THE END.

A+ work right there.
