World Cup 2006

Recommended Posts

I've always gone for France and Holland.

The diversity of Canada is shown pretty well around world cup time. I mean, almost everyone reverts back to there ancestral roots and votes for their home country. I guess this is a unique trait to Canada, the most multicultural country of all.

Canada isn't the most multicultural country of all...

Then who is?

...

I would think it would be really difficult to say for sure. To determine you'd pretty much have to count how many cultures are in a given nation but then you'd have difficulty in determining whether or not one group of people can be considered a different culture. For instance in India they've identified like 800 different languages and more than twice as many dialects. There's a variety in religious belief and practice, and so on and so forth. But to someone in the west, they're all just Indian.

you could say the same thing about the united states. a californian speaks a different language than a georgian, and they DEFINETLY have different cultures. i think when people think "multicultural" they think "multirace" an east indian from india is still east indian, no matter what language they speak or what part of the country they're from.

Sure but whose place is it to make that distinction? I think even if you look at as a question of race rather than culture, there's bound to be all sorts of gray areas that occur.

What I mean is that it's kind of unique how in Canada, people vote the country where their family originally immigrated from.

Here we see people of Italian background rooting for Italy, Korean-Canadians rooting for korea, etc. There's an immense mix of people each choosing their team to root for. In almost every other country though, you would see them rooting for THAT country. Italians for Italy, Brazilians for Brazil, you get the point. Even if Canada had a team playing in worlds, do you think the majority of Canadians would root for Canada?

This is somewhat different, because they are all still from India, making them Indian. Assuming they are fans of World Cup Soccer, think there are a great amount of fans rooting for France there? What about England? India would mostlikely still be their country of choice.

Just to be a dick, I don't really consider the U.S. or Canada to have distinct cultures. The U.S. is a country, not a nation. Tibet is a nation but not a country. See?

The reason why I don't consider North America to have a distinct culture is because a culture needs to be interesting somehow. We spend our time commuting from a cookie cutter neighbourhood in the suburbs to a downtown desk job and back at night. In between we eat food made primarily of some sort of polymer. Everything distinctive about North American society exists only because of convenience, not because of history.

thats what you get from a country founded by people from other countries. the fact of the matter is that there IS NO HISTORY.

When you've spent your life having to sit around while all your older relatives talked in Italian to each other, you'd understand why people whose parents and grandparents are from Italy cheer for Italy in soccer.

There's nothing weird about it. It's the way European society is. Anyone can move to Canada and become a citizen, and become Canadian. But you can't move to Italy, gain citizenship, and be Italian. See: Muslim riots in France last year.

Yeh, somewhat, but it's nothing compared to the shit that goes down in soccer.

My coaches always used to tell us to take dives if the team looked tired (soccer coaches that is)

Yeah, 6-0. Wow.

On the other hand, Holland had the potential to really rout Serbia. There were plenty of opportunities that just weren't capitalized on, likely because the team was a bit rusty. Argentina's played a few games, so they're going to be better oiled than Holland was. I think the biggest problem with the Holland-Serbia game was that Arjen Robben, while a terrific playmaker (and easily won the game for Holland) was a bit selfish when it came to attacking the net. The team needs to co-ordinate better up front, and hopefully they'll have got that down when they face Argentina.

Agreed. Holland is going to run into some major trouble if Robben doesn't become more of a team player.

Arjen Robben has been warned by team-mate Robin van Persie that he cannot win the FIFA World Cup

I'm upset with france.

at least they finally scored. perhaps brighter days are ahead.

Argentina's taking it, and I'm not just saying that because of their rout of Serbia and Montenegro, I'm saying that because it ia my prediction every year.

and the one they won in 1986 they shouldn't have won because diego maradonna handballed it into the net. I hate him so much.

HAHAHAHAH, USA IS OUT, HAHAHAHAHHAHA, OWNED, STUPID STATES, BWA HAHAHA, GHANA OWNS

Czech is out too though... Which is kindof a bummer...

Same with Croatia...

I still have faith in Holland!

And what the hell was with the France/Korea game?? I'm still pissed off! Korea does have a decent team this year, no doubt to that, but France rightfully should have won that match.
