we must remember that people are needed here too. my grandfather wasn't allowed to go to war because he worked at a rubber manufacturing place. but if the forces want a weak vegetarian that faints without warning, they can have me. i wouldn't make boot camp.

You know what I loved about grade 10 history? When we learned about the female contribution to the war effort, we learned about all the health hazards women faced working in jobs normally occupied by men - chemical plants, for example. There was mention of how women were exposed to toxic fumes and chemical burns and all that shit, without mentioning that even more men had been doing the exact same thing for longer. But once a woman is involved...

I'll work on the homefront repopulating the planet in preparation for when the war is over.

adam you have a very modern outlook on everything that goes on.

i would never join the army because i don't believe killing innocent people is the way to get anything done.

it's not like after one country (or multiple) killed 74923847234623947293 people will the other country go "hey, i finally understand where you guys are coming from! sure, we'll surrender and do everything you want us to"

they'd never take me if I wanted to join up (which I don't)

i need more troops, who do you have?

Well, we have a Canadian that lives in America.

okay, we can work through that.

yes we can, and he also has one shoulder blade, one kidney, a 45 degree curvature in his spine, and poor eyesight.

we're screwed.

I voted no, life's bad enough without having someone try to kill you. If ww3 happened do you think Canada would start drafting us young sand bags? IF I was drafted I'd fully expect to die somewhere far from home. I'm gunna go listen to "I, the throw away" now...

If WWI killed trench warfare, why was WWII fought in trenches?

WWII wasn't fought in the trenches. The only times soldiers ever got bogged down and stayed in the same location for length of time was when they were on a beachead (Anzio), stuck in a city (Ortona, Stalingrad) attacking a mountain/fortress (Monte Casino, Tobruk) or fighting through a fortified position (gothic line). WWII was a war of quick movement. Does the word Blitzkreig mean anything to you?

And furthermore, you have no knowledge of European history if you don't understand the underlying causes of WWI (and, by extension, WWII).

Really? I wonder how I ended up with this Master's in History then? Maybe I bought it off ebay?

I'll lead you through the chain of events.

1815: After Napolean's defeat, the Congress of Vienna sets the terms of the balance of power in Europe.

1816: Peace in Europe for the next hundred years

1871: Germany unifies and instantly becomes the largest country in Europe

1872: Balance of power remains the same as it was in 1815; Germany pissed off

1873-1913: Pissing contest between European countries

1914: War!

Your list is wanting and pathetic. Where is the Franco-Prussian War that resulted in so much anguish over Alsace and Lorraine? Where is the scramble for colonies in Africa? Where is the naval arms race between Britain and Germany? Where are the cries for self-determination from Serbia and other would-be nations? Where is the list of secret alliances made between power blocs that made the war unavoidable following the terms set down by Austria-Hungary following the assassination of Franz Ferdinand? Doesn't really all fit under "pissing contest".

EDIT: What the hell do you mean by this:

I'm with Meg on this one. I wouldn't go for several reasons:

1) Wars are stupid on principle

2) I really don't wanna kill anyone and I definately don't wanna get killed myself. I realise there are other positions, but it's still contributing to the same thing.

I also realise that it's sort of hypocritical to not want to kill or be killed, but wanting the freedom that comes from other people doing what I'm not willing to do, but just because I don't want to do something so flawed doesn't mean that it's the right way to do things just because it gets results.

Edit: So I guess I really don't have any good answers, but I doubt I'd enrol nonetheless.

nothing wrong with my values. they can have me if they want me, srsly. also, blind loyalty and patriotism are not good values.
