Matts Views On Radiohead

Recommended Posts

Yeah, I'm not feelin' the Kid A hype.

That record's fuckin' horseshit. Go fuckin' buy [Pink Floyd] Animals or Meddle or Shine On You Crazy Diamond, they're far better. But you know what, I have to give them this

uhh, ok.

avalanche > hail to the thief (which is mediocre at best).

why does anyone compare anything that relates to musical greatness directly with radiohead? of course the Bends, Kid A and Ok Computer are fantastic, but they're so overhyped its not even funny. Maybe I just don't get it.

"avalanche is better than most of radiohead's output, though"

"I would put Avalanche above any single Radiohead album, too. Then, I'd also put five of Radiohead's albums before Matt's next best effort, which is probably Beautiful Midnight or White Light Rock & Roll Review -- both great if not for a couple of shitty filler tunes."

thanks for calling me out though...

I'll add to that and say Beautiful Midnight and Audio of Being > The Bends, although that is saying a lot. 'Fake Plastic Trees' and 'My Iron Lung' are two of my most favourite songs, but as a whole, the two MGB records stand up far stronger as albums.

i love radiohead, but even i get pissed off when people are "ok computer this, kida that.. blah blah best ever blah' they're good, but not amazing. there are probably 50 albums i own that i find better than any radiohead album.

Yeah Radiohead is a hype thing not a talent thing. They had it, they lost it...I mean come on since Kid A we're talking bad acid trips at best.

Also, I don't see the point in going "this record is better than that record" because, at the end of the day, isn't it all subjective?

Because you have to find the difference between liking and recognizing genius or crap. By crap I mean it doesn't bring anything new or improving to the art. What I mean by that is that I like Oasis for example. But they're crap because they're not giving anything new to the art of music. On the other hand, there are a lot of Pink Floyd albums that I don't like, but I can recognize they were for the most part genius.

That's where people need to learn how to draw the line in debates such as these.

this was said by Matt quite awhile ago right?

Kid A is good, but def not better than OK and the Bends in my opinion, a lot of people have said Amnesiac and Kid A should have been one album of the best songs, i totally agree, that would have been a killer record. Hail to the Their is weak comapred to their other records, Pablo Honey is a great grunge record. As far as comparign to Matt, that's hard i think, as their both great artists, Matt's my fav and Radiohead make it into third behind Wilco.

and i think the Talk Talk comment is warranted, that band's last couple albums are amazing, i'm just getting into them, they were definitely ahead of their time.

I like Radiohead. I've got all their albums except for the live one. But here is the thing, they're not the greatest. they're really good, not great. And the thing is, wether or not Matt likes then, I like them. Thats all that matters to me.

I think I just realized something about Matt. Have you ever noticed that he either LOVES something or he HATES it. there never seems to be any middle ground. One thing I can say though is that he is his own toughest critic, I've never seen a musician who is as willing to trash their own work as he is.

There's an interview (post-MGB) where he says, referring to rh: "They're wicked, don't get me wrong."

Pretty sure it was a Chart interview, but it was in the magazine, not online. I'll see if I can find it in the next couple of days. I don't think his earlier comments were against radiohead's music so much as against the hype and the musical ignorance of younger fans who thought "Kid A" type of stuff had never been done before.

I remember him raving about the release of Hail To the Thief on his blog once.

He said something like, "Radiohead can't put out a bad record."

around that release I remember Matt talking about the fact that whatever RH puts out critics will say its amazing, whether its crap or not.
