How is this even comparable to a lava lamp? A lava lamp uses the extremely simple physics of convection while a non-polar substance (wax) remains separated from the extremely polar water.

 

This, on the other hand, uses UV strobe lights and a water-fluorescein solution in perfect timing to make it appear as though a goddamned drop of water is staying perfectly still. AND YOU CAN POKE THE DROP OF WATER AND THE FORM STAYS STILL AS WELL! It's relatively simple to build a lava lamp, but you try buildling, from scratch, one of them time fountains. when you've got a head full of acid, it doesn't matter how complicated it was to build something. those drops in that clock are always the same shape and color. the blobs in a lava lamp have subtle variations in their color and are constantly morphing, soft shapes. very pleasing.
