I don't agree, I think it's only a matter of time before someone comes along and has that level of impact. It has always been that way.

Technology has changed that, plus there are too many genres now within mainstream music, everyone likes different things. No 'One' band can have as huge an impact as the beatles did nowadays.

exactly. nor will a band put out that much quality content in six years.

 

looking for the next beatles is an exercise in futility, there won't be a "next" beatles, that's what made them so special, so unique.

Muchmusic is your perfect definition of Top 40 music. Looking at their playlist, I guess the Chili Peppers are the best top 40 band right now. Incubus also made it into the top 40 (tv & radio) many times so I won't count them out.

 

BUT a lot of bands make it into the top 40 so it doesn't mean that they're a top 40 band. For example, Green Day have had more top 40 hits than most bands these days but I wouldn't call them a top 40 band.
