I don't think I've ever seen a thread here about Pavement or Stephen Malkmus. Pavement are probably the best indie rock band of the 90s as they with Sebadoh (well, Lou Barlow from Dinosaur Jr) really kick-started the whole lo-fi style in the early 90s. Without Pavement, there would be no Beck or Neutral Milk Hotel.

Slanted And Enchanted is the perfect example of their lo-fi sound but I think for sure that their 94 album Crooked Teeth, Crooked Teeth was easily their best album and one of the best albums of the 90s. These days, they're turned into a really melodic band and now share some alt-country roots (thanks to Guided By Voices) on top of their layered and wacky experimental sound (borrowed from Sonic Youth).

Any fans?

EDIT: these days of course meaning the later years as they haven't recorded an album together this decade.

I have one of their albums, (whichever one has Silence Kid as the first track) and it's decent, but kinda hard to get into.

That's Crooked RAIN, Crooked RAIN...fantastic album. Give it another listen.

Yeah, Crooked Rain was a music changing experience for me, they've been my favourite band since. Slanted and Enchanted is also a great place to start, if you can get past the lofi sound and hear the sweet tunes underneath. Brighten the Corners is my least favourite album, but yeah it is more straightforward.

A couple weeks ago their third record Wowee Zowee got the deluxe reissue treatment and I'm still waiting for mine to arrive. Pavement's reissues give you some great bang for your buck, better than most.

But yeah, it would be nice to see more love for them, but then again I think I"m happy with people finding them and enjoying the music isolated from other fans. so PURE.

Wow, I went back and listened to the Pavement album I have again, and...wow. I was impressed. Give em another shot, everyone.

You heard the man. Go, go, go!

If there are any STP haters, there is one track (range life) that specifically makes fun of the group. So if that'll get you people to give them a listen, then so be it.
