Mg(b) - So Good It Makes You Shiver!

I don't know if music has this effect on any one else, but there are certain bits of songs that send shivers down my spine they're so good. Examples are 'The Scientist' by Coldplay and 'Robin Hood' by Ocean Colour Scene. It could be a particular lyric, the guitars or the way it's sung.

 

The last 1min 20secs of 'Failing The Rorschach Test' had this effect on me last night, its the first time I'd really noticed it, but its amazing. It's the lyric, the way it goes in to that section of the song, and the way it's sung.

 

Does any one else have any of these moments in relation to MG(B) songs

I'm sure there are a few others but those come to mind off of the top of my head. A lot of Johnny Cash and Matt Mays does this to me as well.

I spent the two acoustic sets I saw (Calgary during the acoustic tour and at Calgary Folkfest) which chills going down my back basically the whole time, but if you want some specifics, here goes:

 

Sort of a Protest Song- the whole damn thing, mainly "our lives in these empty spaces aside" and "no pain, no gain" at the end.

 

The Rat Who Would Be King- "love's not enough", right at the end before the "siren" effect- you know what one I'm talking about

 

Strange Days- "backwards into a wall of fire"

 

The Fine Art of Falling Apart- all of it, namely the chorus bits and "I used to think I'd get over everything, but everything just got over me"

 

There's plenty more I'm sure.

 

A non-MG one that stands out was hearing my ex sing "No Rain" by Blind Melon with her a capella group.

Apparitions - the end "apparitions"

The Rat Who Would Be King - the ending - "you know love's not enough"

 

Blue Skies Over Badlands - sort of the whole song for me, but mainly "what if you woke up in the middle of the night, in your bare feet you walked outside"

all sorts of songs do that to me. not just Matt good.

Most of Matt's songs have that effect on me, but I agree with most of the one's that have been posted so far, such as Prime Time Deliverance " headlight morning glow", as well as the lines " wearing a pink bunny suit, sour cherry red lipstick, hanging from the closet doors".

Pretty much the whole song of "Avalanche" gives me goosebumps. Although I've listened to it a million times, it still continues to have that effect and that's something that makes Matt stand out: his songwriting, the emotion in his voice, and the instruments he chooses to accompany him -so incredible.

the "but yeah" in Sort of a Protest Song, the guitar solo bit in My Out of Style is Coming Back, and for some reason, particularly when i first heard it, all of The Workers Sing a Song of Mass Production. that's probably the least interesting song on that album, but something about it has just... a vibe.

I get shivers sometimes while listening to Weapon where the slow interlude ends and it goes back into the heavy riff. And in the live version of SWW with the extra verse.

 

Yeah, I guess I get the feeling a lot with MG songs.

many other artists do it too... but, so far, matt's music is most consistent in that area.

K, the last verse of Protest is getting my all goosebumped, again.

 

The guitar swells during the last verse of "I Miss New Wave" also give me chills, as do Pat's drum hits in "Avalanche" at 4:11.

The way I see that part is that he left someone (or has been left by someone) with whom he had been for a very long time and when he gets to that line he's now with a new person so he rests in a stranger's arm

Running For Home-The whole song, the lyrics are by far one of my favorites in any Matthew Good song.

 

Avalanche-The line "I'm heir to it all." And the that little instrumental section after.

The part in "Running For Home" in the middle of the second verse after "looking for the defects, talking like it's a reflex" - Gets me everytime
