Windows -> Mac

Recommended Posts

Hey everyone,

I just bought a new MacBook Pro and formerly used Windows. I'm probably going to end up getting Bootcamp or something to use Windows on my mac in addition to OS X but I'd like to avoid it if at all possible. I'm just wondering if anyone out there has used quality, functional programs on the mac that are comparible to the following programs:

CDex

Nero 6 Ultra Edition

ID3 TagIT 3

FLAC Frontend

dBpowerAMP

Also, any good Anti-Virus Programs or adware and spyware removal programs?

Any help anyone can give me would be really appreciated. I've been searching and reading product reviews over the past few days and have managed to find mac versions of other programs or replace them but I'm looking to speed up the process just a bit.

Thanks in advance. ;)

Messenger for Mac

I've been a Mac user for a few years and I'm telling you, there is no need for anti-visus/spyware stuff. I've never had a single problem.

I'm not very farmiliar with most of the software you listed, because, like I said, I'm a Mac user. I believe these are mostly software for working with audio though right? I wouldn't normally mind checking it out myself, but I have to get going in a few minutes.

Toast is a good choice for your audio/video encoding and burning needs.

Switch will convert your audio files into whatever format you like.

iTunes can take care of all your basic ripping, burning and can convert between a few file types.

I hope this helps. If you have any more specific questions, I'd be happy to help if I can.

GOD DAMN I LOVE MY APPLES. The very thought of Windows makes me want to stab myself in the eye. Sorry...had to get that out. ;)

...yet.

At any rate, they certainly have their following. People can make the same arguments about Linux, but in the end it's really personal preference.

She's right though, you probably won't need much in the way of AV or spyware/malware protection for the time being.

Adam:

Is it because I slyly chose the words "I love my apples" and it can be interpreted in a dirty way? Or have I done something else, that's awesome enough to make you love me? ;)

Matt: I find the pricing to be very comparable now that the intels have been released. Nevertheless, it's definitely worth the price with all the time you will save and hair you will still have left, since you no longer feel the need to pull it out from the stress of working with a Microsoft product.

For the record, with the exception of some very odd configurations involving less-than-reputable third-party audio drivers coded by the lowest bidder...I don't really have alot of trouble with a Windows system, using many admittedly strange MS applications.

No shotgun wedding, huh?

Thank you for all of your help!! I must say I'm very impressed with my mac thus far... It was a bit to adjust to at first as a long time Windows user but it's pretty awesome.

Hahaha, msn messenger for mac... Who knew? I shoulda looked that up, it would have been an easy find. Truthfully I managed to replace about half of my software already so I hadn't even looked for anything on the list that I provided here as I've been searching for other stuff.

I also forgot to mention Adobe Audition 2.0.

CDex is just ripping software, but it's the best I've used. It gets through most copy protection on all of my CD's that I purchase and am legally entitled to put on my iPod (Fuck copy protection annoys the shit out of me).

Nero basically is just burning software but I don't really need anything great. As long as I have a functional burning program that's efficient I'm good.

ID3 TagIT 3 is just for tagging mp3's, I've already tagged my entire library so I can probably live with using iTunes to tag whatever I add to it from this point on. I will miss it though as I can't find any other tagging program (Windows or Mac) that kicks as much ass as that does.

dBpowerAMP is a converter, mainly for my lossless audio incase I ever want a particular track on my iPod I can convert (I'd kill for a 700gig mp3 player with lossless importing capabilities).

I'm going to download Switch and give it a try when I get home.

I was looking at Toast when I was looking at mac based equivalent programs before I bought the mac and the only thing that bothers me is it is made by Roxio so I immediately lost interest in it. Is it actually really good or is it one of those programs that gives you headaches to use but you use it anyway because you really have no choice?
