This bugs the absolute shit out of me. It's exactly the whole Beta/VHS situation all over again but now with DVD's, I dont really care who wins i just want my DVD collection not to be obsolete - they betther run on either of these two players. If they dont, i will literally never buy another DVD product in my life and will probably smash a lot of things. Such as the faces of the owners of these companies.

they're inherently the same, it's just a matter of which one is backed by more/bigger companies. i think blu-ray will win. but considering that a blu-ray player costs upwards of $1000 and an hd-dvd drive can be had for $199, i'd say you can't lose by trying hd-dvd first.

I don't care. I don't want to start buying more stuff that I don't need and I don't want to be buying a new machine AGAIN.

I'm just going to stick with DVD player. I don't care if I have to put in more discs or the picture quality becaues the picture quality is good enough.

nobody uses anything but a computer to listen to music, anyway. however, if you cared enough about sound quality, you'd buy a standalone dedicated cd player.

this is true, but i bet that's a big selling point anyway.

it's not possible to convert them to a higher resolution, they merely change the way it's played to emulate a higher resolution. the difference is nominal. at least to my tv and i.

having recently learned that hd-dvd does not have dvd players that output 1080p (yet), i have to push 100% behind blu-ray.

i won a blu-ray player like a year and a half ago when i went to some tech convention thingy with a buddy who was in the industry. i had no idea what it was and my buddy figured it was one of those technologies that would stay in asia so when some nerd from commercial electronics offered me $400, i took it. considering the fun i had with those four bills and the constant boredom i have with movies, i'd say it was a fair trade.

HD-DVD for now, though if Sony can get in gear with blu-ray, who knows.

i wouldn't expect "regular" DVDs to go anywhere anytime soon, though. there just isn't enough of a market for high-definition yet (HD sets are estimated to be in maybe 30% of US homes) to warrant going crazy on either of the new formats.

actually, i think the next wave's gonna be wax cylinders. ;)
