It's really just one guy named John Darnielle. Really low-fi folk oriented acoustic stuff, but the lyrics are fantastic. He plays with geography and personal anecdotes that give the music a really intimate feel. Voice is amazing, and the breadth of available material is pretty varied. Anyone heard him before?

i have. its alright. if you're someone who really cares about lyrics, then id suggest giving him a listen, but otherwise, i dont think the mountain goats are all that special.

Downloading the latest album now. Seems interesting.

My favourite songs are Going to Georgia (big surprise), and Against Pollution. But the whole Talahassee album is stunning.

They're really awesome (I say "they're" because often times it is more than on person performing after all), quite a cool style without it seeming like a deliberate attempt at originality.

Plus, he covered "The Sign" by Ace of Frigging Base. How sweet is that?

Hey I'm the last person to defend a band like Ace of Base, but just how random it is that he covered that? That's awesome. I hate the original, and I hate the Base, but his cover is so cool.

It was something of a joke.

 

I think it's always cool when a band does a cover of a not so good song, but a not so good artist and turns it into something worthwhile. For instance when most any artist covers a Depeche Mode song, something better than the original results. The exception of course is when Manson did "Personal Jesus" or whatever... because anything he does pretty much automatically blows.

I only know a few songs by them but they're pretty good. Cynical and witty lyrics, I like that.
