Some Random Drumming (by Me)

Recommended Posts

Yesterday I finally figured out how to get my little iPod recorder attatchment thingy to work, and I decided to just record myself messing around. These aren't really 'solos,' they're just me dicking around. There's some mistakes, and a bit of grooviness, so I hope you like it.

Track 1: This one is a bit disjointed, but has some cool stuff in it. It moves relatively quickly, so it doesn't bog down. http://www.yousendit.com/transfer.php?acti...86BA6EF1949EBC4

Track 2: Oh man. I get really really interested in the one groove I start playing near the start (around 0:48), and just try some subtle variance with it for a bit. It's a little boring, but I think the funkiness of the groove itself is very high, and I will definitely be experimenting with it more in the future. Around 1:30 I start adding in some more accents and stuff into the groove, which I think sounds pretty cool, and then around 2:00 I just start something else, which eventually turns into some malformed rolls, which I was doing because I had just adjusted my toms and wanted to make sure they were set up properly.

If you don't listen to anything else except the one groove in the beginning, listen to the one little snippet from 2:29-2:32. I get a really really nice one handed buzz roll going on the snare in the middle of the little fill.

Track 3: This is the the main beat from a Matt Good song. Can anyone tell which one? http://www.yousendit.com/transfer.php?acti...2D4F2B27FE5D73F

Track 4: Some cool rim work which eventually turns into some fast tom stuff. I like it, as it has a very organic progression, I think. I need to stop hitting my ride to do accents though, as it sounds like shit. http://www.yousendit.com/transfer.php?acti...3DCFA104CE06928

So there you have it. just some random dicking around, but I hope you like it. I'd especially like to hear from other drummers (like Christine). Lemmie know whatcha think.

The first one is pretty nice, a tad sloppy at times. The second one has some neat parts and fills...I noticed some nice high-hat work on this one. Your kit has a decent sound...the kick/bass drum is stuffed?

and ya, the last one is pretty fun...lots of good stuff in there. Get a band or something.

Thanks man, it means a lot. And yeah, the kick is stuffed with random blankets and pillows.

For anyone that d/ls them, it may be a bit screwy in iTunes because they were recorded as voice memos. Just uncheck "remember playback position" under the options for the track (right click the track and click Get Info.)

is it common to stuff the kicks? my friends did that to theirs, but i don't imagine that everyone does it.

Everyone seems to do it...except the badass drummers who can tune the shit out of the kick drum and have a noyce sound.

The stuffed sound is kind of lame.

Where do you find stuff to record onto iPods?

I'm pretty sure I got mine at Best Buy. Try that, Future Shop, whatever. It honestly shouldn't be hard to find.

Edit: An also, no one's guessed the Matt Good song, yet!

This is wicked Owen. I haven't been on my kit for over a week and now I want to jump on it...but it's almost 4 in the morning, so no go.

I knew the MG beat right away, but I won't spill the beans in case others are trying to guess.

I really like track 1, particularly the middle. The snare work you pointed out in track two is impressive; that's the kind of thing I'm trying to improve on. The rim work in track 4 is interesting. It's not something I've concentrated much on, but yours sounds great, maybe I'll try it more often.

What kind of kit are you on and what does it consist of?

It would be so cool to jam with you. Have you ever played with another drummer? It's the funnest thing ever.;)

It's a weird combination of Remo and CB hardware/skins, some random high-hat by a no-name company (even though I like my high hat more than any other I've played on) and then a Zildjian crash, and a no-name ride. I also have a cowbell and a double-kick.

I've never played WITH another drummer (like simultaneously) but I've jammed with my dad back and forth a few times, as well as had some drum-offs at parties and whatnot.

You got it. It's not very tight (I'm usually a very tight and slightly conservative player) but there's some fun stuff goin on.

http://www.yousendit.com/transfer.php?acti...E957F302D1E2233 I don't really like this one

http://www.yousendit.com/transfer.php?acti...E9AE5F8330AFEDC bogs down a bit around 50 seconds, but there's a sick buzz roll around 2:29-2:31 that I really dig, and some cool high hat stuff near the end.

http://www.yousendit.com/transfer.php?acti...94C59A86846B2A5 this one is just some funy rim stuff, that ends up slowly progressing into a fairly crazy rhythm.

Hope you dig it, man.
