Ah, Racism

You're taking this at the first level man. I notice a skin color difference obviously. But the way my mind processes the color of the skin is the same it processes the color of the hair. That's how I don't see a difference. In other words, you won't get treated or looked at differently by me because you're black or white.

Dan, that's how I see it. I'm black and live and work in a predominately white areas. My girlfriend lives and works in a predominately white state. I'll be honest, even I notice when other people of color are around. I notice with the thought of, "wow I'm not the only one."

We always notice things different about those around us. It's the reaction that counts. Ladies that clutch their handbags, even though the person of color who is walking by them, is wearing an Armani suit...sadly that kind of shit is ingrained.

I'm curious to know why he thinks white people are a problem? He never even siad. at least hitler had reasons, even though they were stupid ones.

it's a shame that attitudes like this still exist, although it annoys me when people go the opposite way and pretend that they're free from prejudice. everyone is prejudiced about just about everything. anyone who says otherwise is either lying or ignorant about themselves. it's just a matter of to what degree are you prejudiced, and whether or not you act adversely to your prejudice.

my biggest prejudice is probably against black people. that doesn't mean I'm racist, it means that if I'm walking alone at night I'll be more worried if I cross paths with a black dude, if only for a second, as opposed to crossing paths with a white guy.

ya gotta understand your prejudices not hide them or lie. we're all prejudiced against that guy! he's probably not even stupid. most likely he's had negative experiences with white people before that have made him angry in the same that we've had experiences which tend to make us prejudiced against ignorant, genocidal bigots.

Yeah but seriously, where did he get that Armani suit? Just kidding.

Well that fear can probably be explained because of the news. Because we're sort of brainwashed "It was a black man". Michael Moore pretty much got it right on that one in Farenheit 9/11.

As far as that guy is concerned, no matter what the experiences you've had in your life, there is absolutely no valid reason for wishing people would be eliminated off the surface of the earth. None whatsoever.

Yes we all have prejudices, does that make it OK? No...especially when it comes to color or sex. When it comes to other prejudice, the key is to get educated about the subject in question. A world free of prejudice is possible if people educate themselves.

I'll give you an example that is far from this situation but still valid. I had a huge prejudice about a political party in Quebec. I thought they were political whores. Then I read their platform and started listening to their ideas and ended up voting for them!

That sort of attitude is possible for any situation. Of course, not only positive will come out of educating yourself. But at least, in those cases, the prejudice will become a fact-based opinion which is actually valid.

I disagree. fear was a part of humanity long before michael moore at his first hot dog ;) also before the proliferation of electronic media.

prejudice is not inherently a bad thing. it's amoral. we think of it as a bad thing only because the word is normally used with negative associations. nobody calls someone "prejudiced" when their prejudgement is positive.

hating someone is not immoral. killing someone based on prejudices stemming from gross ignorance is immoral. but still, it's the killing that's immoral, not the prejudice.

in fact, prejudice is not only not a bad thing, it's a completely essential part of the thought process and it's essential for survival. it's a survival tool. people aren't born with unlimited knowledge, so have to rely on intuition and past experience in order to judge what's good and what's bad.

some fears are instilled in people from years of evolution, (spiders, heights). if you're not afraid of heights you might fall off a cliff and die. prejudice is a good thing when you know not to play with a cobra. you might say that fear is different from prejudice, but it's not . it's a feeling you have with lack of evidence. as a kid you fear poison ivy because your parents told you to stay away from it, although you don't have a damn clue why that's true other than you're biased(prejudiced) in favor of your parents.

we're programmed to look for similarities. and if you get into 20 car accidents involving 20 red sports cars, you will likely have become prejudiced before the 3rd accident. and that's not a bad thing, it's your body telling you that if you want to stay alive, stay the fuck away from red cars.

and so wishing death upon millions is completely valid

Dan and Rabbit both make valid points.

Acknowledging your prejudices is the beginning of growing beyond them.

I don't agree that prejudice is a useful tool. Let's not confuse prejudice with a healthy sense of awareness. I'm very aware when a group of men are near speaking rudely or loudly, no matter what color. I'm very aware when police cars are near when I'm driving. Doesn't mean I'm prejudiced...it means I'm aware.

Yeah I agree more with that point than rabbits...

Imus was fired, Sharpton should be too, and Jesse Jackson should be censured.

You can't have racial equality, and then have double standards too.

what Imus said was stupid, wrong, and insensitive.

Sharpton and Jacksons behavior regarding the Duke players, was stupid, wrong , and insensitive.

Seems to me, that you can't punish one and not the rest. In a way, what Sharpton and Jackson did was far worse...they convicted those young men in a court of public opinion...what gave them the right. Imus made a stupid, idiot remark...and he was punished beyond the worst extreme... I have never had any respect for Sharpton, he's a fucking attention whore. Jackson, I respected a great deal...I'm seriously rethinking that impression.

The guy in the video should probably be arrested for violent hate-speech or something. Is it legal to threaten the extermination of a race, or does that still fall under free-speech? (serious question, i dont know)

Free speech is exactly what it sounds like.

I could direct you to some Christoper Hitchens speeches as to why hate speech legislation isn't cool...

i know that but what I'm saying is if it is "free speech" then how can Imus or even Michael Richards get in shit for what they said? There is such a double standard when it comes to free speech.

Was there prominent white slavery in North America? it all depends on what you've done to each other before something is taboo.

Exactly.

The legal rules sometimes sound rediculous, but free speech and hate speech run across these very dubious lines. For example, if you have a candid audience, such as being a teacher, and you spout out hate speech you will certainly get shit on, and rightly so.

However, if you're simply a private citizen and you just want to walk down the street and say whatever, then nobody will touch you.

Slander though, will be turned into hate speech depending it's context and content.

It's all about subjigated peoples, there is an element here that may seem hypocritical, but when you look at it, minorities have been the ones exploited on this continent. Women, black folks, aboriginals, etc, are basically the mainstay's of hate speech and to protect people from disgusting comments that can lead to reactionary, racist and patriarch movements they're free speech (the courts feel) need to be curtailed.

It's not like this guy will be taken seriously, he will not create a mass movement.

However, if it was white people, there is a long history of white people exploiting all of the above mentioned.

So theres a context here - white people have been known to exploit, and we don't want to see a return to some of the darkest days on this continent and other continents. i.e. Europe.

Michael Richards is a no talent dimwit, who verbally attacked the wrong people with racial comments. It wasn't even people of color who heckled his ass in the first place. He deserved whatever he got.

Imus, made a comment...and was punished far worse than he should have been. So many, have gotten away with so much of all races, he was made an example of. Do I think he deserved to be fired, hell no. He should have been fined and suspended. End of Story.

Sharpton, Limbaugh, and others have said far worse and nothing has been done to them.

As for the "kill whitey" nitwit...please bear in mind, he is not the norm...he is the extreme, just as the 72 virgin loving terrorist muslims are not the norm, they are the extreme.

There are hate speech laws...and they certainly would apply to the nitwit.

That is so true. He was a good Cramer but nonetheless, that fuse he blew was far from acceptable. In my own opinion, you don't blow a fuse at a race because of a group of people if you're not a racist to begin with.

A little off topic, but I consider news casts racist when they take the time to mention the race

Wars for thousands of years have been fought over religion, and ethnicity...you'd think by now, we'd be over this shit. Evolution seems to have skipped that part of humanity's consciousness.

The nitwit in VA was a South Korean National for christ sakes...that all came from the fact that he "looked asian".

We are all human beings, I never get beyond that. Shit, we all need to eat, drink, and breathe to live. Any other differences are superficial.

I'm with you, fermenting fascist calls for another race's extermination should be called into question, as hate speech and he should be arrested.
