Alabama Motel Room (1995)
Alabama Motel Room was the first music video released by Matthew Good Band. Directed by Samir Rehem, it debuted in 1995 to promote the album Last of the Ghetto Astronauts.
The video alternates between the band performing in a cramped, dimly lit motel room with peeling wallpaper and staticāfilled televisions, and a tense story of a man on edge. Matthew Good sings directly to camera as neon light filters through the window.
In the narrative sequences the man grips a handgun, paces the room, and watches a frightened woman huddled in the bathroom. Close-up shots of floating dust particles, the gun barrel, and the woman’s tear-streaked face heighten the suspense. In the final moment the man lowers the weapon and stares into a cracked mirror.
