Alert Status Red (2004)

"Alert Status Red" was the second video to be released off of White Light Rock & Roll Review. Directed by Bill Morrison, the video was filmed on May 15, 2004 at Centennial High School in Coquitlam, BC. It premiered on June 1, 2004 on Matthew Good's official website but was taken down the same day after complaints about the Columbine footage. The video returned on June 4, 2004 accompanied by Good’s statement on society’s complicity in violence.

The video opens with Matthew Good and his band performing in the empty hallways of Centennial High School in Coquitlam, British Columbia. Performance shots alternate with stark news footage of riots, military drills, and brief flashes of the Columbine High School massacre. Quick cuts and grainy overlays heighten the sense of chaos and looming threat.

The title references the United States terror warning system and frames the song as a critique of modern violence. By juxtaposing school corridors with clips of real-world brutality, the video underscores the message that no society stands above its own violent impulses. In his re-release note, Good argued that nations who supply weapons cannot claim moral high ground over acts of domestic violence.
