Anti-Pop (2002)

"Anti-Pop" was directed by Chris Nelson. It was the second video to be released off of Audio of Being.

The video prominently features a lawn gnome which is being transported around the Nation as well as Matthew Good's friend, Dale Earnhardt Jr. It may have been inspired by the short story "Wish You Were Here."

The video opens with a porcelain lawn gnome perched on a suburban front stoop, only to be swept away on the back of a pickup truck and sent on a cross-country odyssey. As the gnome hops from hatchback trunks and construction equipment to rented moving vans, we cut to the Matthew Good Band delivering “Anti-Pop” amid swirling fog and strobe lights in a gritty industrial warehouse. Quick cuts and time-lapse sequences underline the gnome’s restless journey, while the band’s raw performance provides the song's driving pulse.

While Anti-Pop didn’t reach No. 1 on the MuchMusic Countdown like some of the band’s earlier videos, it quickly became a cult favorite for its quirky humor and the unforgettable lawn gnome motif.
