In a World Called Catastrophe (2003)
Directed by Kyle Davison, the video was shot in late 2002 and premiered in early 2003 as the second single from Good’s Avalanche album. It adopts the minimalist style used in the “Weapon” video but shifts the focus from personal struggle to global unrest. Released through Universal Music Canada, the video supported the song’s climb to number five on the Canadian singles chart
The video opens with Matthew Good walking across a windswept field toward a distant city skyline, clutching a white flag. Scenes cut to him seated on a simple sofa in an empty room lit by natural light streaming through a large window. Interspersed are stark clips of military hardware, such as tanks rolling and fighter jets in formation, alongside grainy footage of protests and maps that underscore the tension between peace and conflict
Commentary
"I have a huge problem with Canada becoming a little America. We're living next door to the world's biggest media monster. I'm concerned about the impact the US has on how we see our own stuff. Our sense of national unity is fragmented enough already." Matt on saluting the white flag: "I just came up with it... Symbolic to surrendering." - Matthew Good
